I have a question about properly sizing a prong......the one I have has pretty big links and on my rescue guy I can't get it to stay up in the proper position. If I try to take out 1 more link I can't even get the thing back together...........so prolly I should get one with smaller links?

Ya, I would say so. What breed and how big is your dog? For example, I have a 55lb boxer and when I bought her prong collar, I got the medium size, 17-19". I removed 2 prongs and it fits her perfect.

I have a four year old full bred Beagle named Badger. I got a prong collar for him after seeing them in action with a neighbor's dogs as Badger is a huge puller on the leash.
It has worked nicely but when and if I ever need to give a correction or he goes forward and self corrects, he yelps almost every time. Is this just him being a soft dog? Should I be concerned that the prong collar might not be the right thing for him?
Also, can I expect there to ever come a time when I could possibly go back to a normal collar without him pulling? As most Beagles do the little guy loves to follow his nose.
New to the boards and happy to be here by the way. Thanks.

I have several Beagles and I can say that if there is a reason to make noise a lot of them will. I wouldn't be concerned about your dog being vocal with a correction. If it was very hard on him he wouldn't do enough pulling to get a correction. They can be very persistent and hard headed, they usually aren't soft, just vocal.

If you're going to buy a new prong collar, I would get the quick release prong. Easy to put on, easy to take off and you can tighten it depending on which chain link you attach the latch to, so you can make sure it stays in position behind the ears and under the jaw.

New to the boards and happy to be here by the way. Thanks. Make sure the prongs on the collar aren't sharp. That's one reason I like the ones Leerburg sells, the prongs are rounded on the ends. You might want to check out the micro prong, I don't know if it's the right size for a beagle (it says it fits a 9" neck), you would know best:
http://www.leerburg.com/prong.htm#micro
Also try attaching the leash to both rings on the prong instead of just one ring. It eases the correction a bit. Go to Ed's article on fitting a prong: http://www.leerburg.com/pdf/fitprong.pdf and scroll about half way down the page where he writes about Dead Ring vs Live Ring. If you've been attaching the prong to the live ring, it may be too much for your dog.

I bought the quick release prong from Leerburg. I got the small for our Beagle, the micro would have been too small.
My only complaint is that the collar has come apart several times while giving a correction. These might have been level 2 or 3 corrections only also.
I'm glad that I watched Ed's video on the prong and attached the leash to another collar in addition to the prong, otherwise Lucy would have been completely off-leash, about to chase a bunny across the street.

Is the collar high enough up the neck? That's the only problem I've had before my dog was full grown she was sorta in between one link being to tight and one to loose. When it was to loose she could shake her head hard and there was a danger of it coming unglued or if she scratched at it intently with her hind leg. (that now warrants a minor correction if she does it repeatably as she may be trying to lose it and not just itchy)
I haven't used Ed's safety tip for awhile as my only tab got lost so I can't attach a second line at this moment. I've been pretty lucky when she removed the collar she has a real good recall, but I can only imagine your beagle after a rabbit might as well say goodbye!
When I was a kid I spent many a summers day chasing my uncles beagles at Beagle Field trials so I know what you could be up against.

What is the proper size prong collar for a Male Working Line GSD. My pup is only 5mos. old. I won't be using it immediately but I wasn't sure if the medium or large would be appropriate. His dad weighs approx. 86lbs and mom 72lbs. He's about 50lbs. now.
...And what about that quick release feature is it worth it or does it take away from the intended "pronging" purpose?
I'm new to this arena and just wanna make sure I get the right one from the get go.
Thanks
Ray
