I would find a custom butcher as opposed to the grocery store. You can get the cuts that most people don't eat, such as pork necks. I get pork necks for 59 cents, pork liver for 39 cents, chicken leq quarters for 39 cents and I also get all the saw dust I can carry for 10 cents/lbs. The custom butchers have meat saws and the dust is a mixture of meat and bone. My dogs love it.

There aren't any custom butcher shops around here - only grocery stores. Lastnight at the Super Wal-Mart, I did buy some pork neckbones, but they were $1.09 a pound. I plan on going and 'surfing' the meat bins at the grocery stores this week to see what I can find. Wal-Mart's meat isn't cut and packaged at Wal-Mart, it comes pre-packaged, so the odds of finding any outdated or close to outdated meats is slim. Not to mention there's no one to bargain with.

My mom said that you used to be able to go back to the meat department in grocery stores and ask the butcher (or whatever you call the person in charge back there) for some "dog bones," and he'd go in the back and bring you out a bunch for free. Do they still do this? Is it even worth it -- nutritionally speaking, that is?

Most places sell them now. There are still some meat markets that will give them away, but they are few and far between. My sister used to get some from a meat place on 7th ave in Hendersonville for free. Of course, it is the worst place in town- right across from the greyhound station. LOL. For the most part what they are giving you are recreational bones, not feed bones.
