Quote:have you ever heard of someone attacked while their mastiff just stood by and watched? i would be very surprised. mind you, they won't protect property. but their human? absolutely!
WOW! I have had 3 owners come in to have mastiffs worked in pp over the years. DUDS! DUDS I TELL YOU!
I did work one years ago that would bite you, then sit down. I worked him once and you had to get pretty close before he would think about it.
The others, I could of beaten the entire family to death and they would have watched from the corner, then went home with me. True duds.

did you actually start beating on their family? or are you guessing this would be the case because they had no interest in bite training? big difference.

It was a long time ago and I shook the guys pretty hard. They were a lttle mad at me, and pretty disappointed with the dog. Needless to say, I could of done some serious damage, or took whatever I wanted including the dog.

lol, jeff. well, i'm sure your story has helped discourage people from getting mastiffs for personal protection. fine by me!
i've never seen a mastiff that wouldn't respond if he felt his people were in danger, nor one that would just walk off with anybody without my OK. but, i suppose they are individuals in the end, just like dogs of any breed.

the only experience i've had with dogs trained in protection work, these dogs struck me as very dangerous animals that would kill if their owner wasn't there to stop them. i mean no offense by this, but i very frankly do not understand why someone would want to own such an animal. it's like having a loaded gun lying around all the time.
They are potential dangerous, but we know it and take precautions accordingly. Pet owners dogs are equal as dangerous if not even more dangerous for other reasons, but they don't know it or accept it and this is like letting a child play with a loaded gun. Did you know that the most dangerous breeds are labrador and cocker spaniel; Oh he is sooooo cute and Hap

All dogs and dog owners are different. If you can't read dogs well enough to know what they are like in social situations then sell the dog, you are to silly to have one.
Hey Jeff,
It's one thing to know what a DOG will do in social situations, a whole different thing to know what PEOPLE will do.
I would hope that if you got a fairly serious dog that the issue of having it be a therapy dog would never come up.
Agreed 100%
I think since really serious dogs are made more than born, that most dogs can deal with people petting them.
You think? I need to go back and re-read 90% of this forum again, because I obviously misunderstood all of the "stuff" dogs are born with and either have or don't. With that logic, one could just as easily take the same puppy from any given litter and create either a therapy dog or a PPD.
If you are in a place where some idiot goes woof into your dogs face, let him get bitten. O.K. maybe not, but I really wanted to say that
Indeed...I was very torn about it at the time.
If you are at a dog show you should know that people that go along with the whole "Look how pretty fluffy is" mentality, are basically too dumb to be around your dog.
One reason I used to bring this particular dog along was to educate people to the fact that even though Briards *look* cute, many don't tend to act that way....especially with strangers. But hey, I'm allowed to have a learning curve. The stupid thing would be in repeating mistakes, so I don't put him in situations like that any more....more for his own sake than anyone else's.

Thanks for the tip on the DVD, I actually was readinga about that DVD last night and even though my dog isnt a puppy anymore, its seems to have some good info in it, so I think I'll order it up.
Also, as far as this being a 'stupid and boring topic', all I can say is that I dont think that any question is a dumb question. If I dont ask, I wont know. EVERYONE on this bored was new at one point and I guarantee not ONE of you got to where you are at today and got the knowledge you have, without asking questions and researching. Thats what the board is all about....right?
If anyone feels the questions are not worthy, no need to reply, I am sure others will chime in.
I appreciate ALL of the responses!!!! Didnt mean to 'stir the pot'
