there are muscles and nerves that control the flow of urine. Here is a interesting question. My making our dogs hold their urine for a lenghty period of time, are we weakening their bladders and muscles or are we strengthening them?
Since asking these questions I have talked to my vet and we have my GS on hormones. She is in the 4th day of taking them and only one day left because he said not to give them more than 5 consecutive days. Which after that she should only take 1 pill every 7 days. So far she still wets at night. I have been leaving her in her pen during the day and she stays in at night. I let her outside often to wet but we still have the problem during the night. I can give her the pill one more day and I am afraid damage was done during her surgery that caused her to loose control right after the surgery and if so, from what I have gotten over the internet it something usually occurs three to five years after nutering. Hers came to soon making me think there was damage done during the surgery. I may be wrong but I am open for other thoughts. I got the name of a vet a bit of a distance from here, that has her own hospital and does accupuncture which I am going to check into, just waiting to see about the hormone pills. I really appreciate all the replys I am getting and I am listening to all of them. Thanks again.

I just wanted to let everyone know that my GS made it through the night without wetting so maybe the harmone pills will work after all. This is the last day I can give the pills to her daily so thanks so much for the information given by you. Now we go to 1 pill every 7 days so please wish us luck and say a prayer. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I am so sorry about you 10 year old dog. I love my animals and go through an awful lot when I loose one. I hope the new medication works for both of your sakes. I guess there are lots of meds out there. I have gotten so much info from the discussion board and am checking into all of it. It helps me feel good that there are people out there who are willing to help you and take the time to do it.

Just to let everyone know, the harmone pills I gave to my GS did not work so she is back on Proin, taking 3 times a day. I believe more damage was done to her during surgery because normally after being spayed it is usually 3 to 5 years after when the incontinence starts and her started right away. I am still contacting an acupuncturist to see if anything else can be done. Thanks again for all your help.

Chelsea
Chelsea,
I am in the same boat as you I believe. The Stibestrol worked for a day or so and then back to square one. I am starting to volunteer at a local low cost spay-neuter clinic tomorrow so I will pick the brain of the vet as soon as I can. I have also been told there is a surgery that they can sometimes do to tighten the muscle around the urinary sphincter. With all you have gone through you may be reluctant to open your girl up again, but it may be an option. I know exactly what you are going though. Hang in there.
I know this is a very old topic, but i know exactly what chelsea and maybe deanna is going through as well, i have been fighting incontience for many months with my 1 year old female gsd. to make a long story short, she had it since i brought her home at 8 weeks. many test were done, everything came out negative, (test were done when she was around 4 monthes) then the leaking suddenly stopped than i got her spayed a month later the leeking started again always when she is sleeping. at night mostly, so finally the vet said it was incontinence and he gave me proin 1 a day. it works, it has been about 3 monthes now, i tried skipping the pill to every other day, but than leaking would start up again, so i just give it to her once a night, with dinner, but i also notice that i have to limit water at night, still or we have an accidant, i also use plastic inbetween her doggie bed, to help with any messes, i have notices this pill makes her pant and a little restless, but it is better then wet spots, we have had success with the proin, but i do still have to limit her water, i am told she will be on it for the rest of her life, cause there is not cure for incontience. just wanted to share that with you chelsea, hope it helps that you are not alone, cause i had thought i was, i thought it was only ageing dogs that had it.
