Dave,
If an 8 week old puppy is showing strong defensive drive, it's pretty safe to say he/she will NOT be a good PP or bite dog candidate. That shows bad temperment and weak nerves. An 8 week old pup should NOT be worked in defense, that is I'm sorry to say, absurd. It may fool the uniformed into thinking it works because the dog may display all kinds of nasty looking protective behavior thats if it doesn't totally shut down. It may lunge while backtied and look very civil but rest assure that dog will not defend or protect anything except itself and probably only when cornored. I don't see any good coming from working an 8 week old puppy in defense
I understand you Chris, others have seen what you've read and they got the same reaction.
Dave:
"Should an 8 week old puppy be work in defense? Yes, if he got the seriousness for it."
Dave....with your misconceptions and total lack of knowledge regarding dog training, I can only hope that you are never in a position to give anyone training advice.
Dave do you full understand what "defence" is? Fight or flight! If you put a 8 week old puppy in fight or flight you ARE going to lose that dog. Anyone that works a dog I would say under 2 years old in defense needs to learn more about dog training!
When people get scared they call the police..When the police get scared they call K-9!
Did I forgot to mention that the pup I've been talking about swam across a river before engaging the decoy on the other side where fire and smoke is everywhere?
I still believe given the right genetics and proper foundation a pup can do what most adult dogs can do.

Let me get this straight? The 8 week old pup swam across a river to get to the other side where there was a massive fire - just to bite the decoy?
Where the heck do you train? Did the rest of the litter just get washed down stream? I guess my main question is how much foundation can an 8 week old puppy have? I mean really, I don't care if the breeder made the dam sit and watch protection videos while pregnant, an 8 week old puppy is not going to have the "foundation" to do the sort of training that fight drive entails - at least in my opinion (which is not worth 2 cents generally .
I have a 15 week old puppy right now and the idea of working him in fight drive at this point gives me chills. I guess my idea of a foundation for an 8 week old pup is lots of positive ventures on the protection field - Rags and puppy sleeves etc. I am admittedly a sport person (one with an alternative breed at that) but I want my dog's first imprints on the field to be positive ones.
Oh, Dave, don't tell me your buying into that Baden scam. I see exactly where this is going and where it's coming from. I'm out of this one, I'm to young to loose much more hair than I'v already
Dave, we don't support fiction on this forum, just for your information. And looking back at many of your past posts, your views of dog training have no basis in reality.
This has been said to you before, take some time and read some of the articles that Ed has posted on this site. You have a lot to learn ( and apparently, unlearn ) about dog training and dogs in general.
