Thank goodness for this thread. I needed to read it for sure! After reading and watching the Leerburg BAsic Obedience Training DVD and the segment about the proper use of the prong collar - my hubby and I are both firm believer of this "power steering for dogs" as Mr. Frawley would say. Ginger is now 14 months old - she was 11 mos. when we rescued her. We tried the choke collar for a month and switched to the prong collar. She behaves better and hardly have to give her pass the level 2 correction.
I needed to hear more positive feedback on the prong collar especially today. Ginger had her first big day of socialization at this agility trials to watch her couisn Molly (border collie) run. We used the prong collar and people were very nice, complimented Ginger and she behaved so good. Today was the first time that she and Molly met upclose. Even though we visit often, Molly's in her backyard and Ginger comes in the house. They both did great! Probably because on a neutral ground. We all spent 6 hours at this park and amazed how calm Ginger was around all these dogs. She met a lot of GSDs too. Anyways, a woman that was standing behind us made a comment about Ginger's prong collar and the park "frowns" at this. I told her that we are not competing and just there for moral support for Molly. This woman started throwing all these negative vibes, then bragged that she trains dogs, etc. I told her my views on this but she kept throwing me her anti-prong banders. I got up and excused Ginger and I and walked away (before she steals our joy completely). Unbelievable!

People like the "anti prong lady" are all the same. They talk at you, but never listen. Typical know nothing know-it-alls!! Sorry you ran into her, but good for you for sticking to your guns. People like that, I usually try to ignore.

I'm sending you by PM a page I keep which quotes (and gives credit to) six authoritative web sites, all of which point out that the only drawback to the prong collar is the appearance. These quotes explain the dangers of choke collars and the stupidity (I quote) of gentle leaders.
I print out a couple of these and keep them in my wallet, when I remember. They can be great handouts.......hand it out and politely excuse yourself and walk away! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thank you very much. I will print them all out. My father-in-law (Molly's dad) also used the prong collar for awhile when they first brought Molly home from the shelter. Molly was a year old and came from a very abusive family. She would bite and snarl, then Papa enrolled her to one obedience school, she got kicked out and thank goodness Papa found a place (Canine Capers) that really was patient with her and yes, suggested the prong collar and an e-collar. Molly had both. She's 6 years old now and graduated from her agility training and having so much fun doing it - Papa too!
Ginger, our 14 mos. old GSD wear her prong collar(with a 20 ft. leash) outside and when at the park. She wears her flat collar and a 4 ft. leash indoors (the cats finally welcomed her after 3 months).
I'll make sure I keep a copy of the articles with us the next time we attend one of Molly's agility trials. Ginger also have a backpack that she carries and I can easily hand these out. Sometimes it's cool to just walk away. However, being a mom for 22 years to 2 kids...my motto remains the same: You can mess with me but do not mess with my children and that includes my dog and 3 cats. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

It's just a list of web sites with a quote from each explaining that the only thing wrong with a properly-fitted, correctly-used prong collar is the way it looks to the uninitiated! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Hi All,
Hi Connie, can you send this to me too? My 15 week GSD will be
trained on a pronge.
I haven't purchased any Leerburg DVDs (YET!!! waiting for
$$$ from heaven to fall <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> ) so I'm unsure at what age
appropriateness are pronges? Will my 15 week old Sable be
"ready" for one when she reaches 6 months? Sooner? Later?
God Bless,
Martin
