Incidentally, the story is true, but now that I've re-read my original post I can see that it is good for a laugh. It seems bizarre, but hey that's why I posted it! Yes, Mr. Scott the dog may not have been going for my arm, heck he could have been going for my kneecap for all I know. (Since I am not a student of schutzhund training I just assume thats where dogs training for protection head for). Who knows maybe this nice muzzled dog was just running up to say "hello".
At any rate for-mentioned dog was not wearing a muzzle the previous class which makes me wonder...what's up?
That was the first time that I have seen a muzzled dog in obedience class.
Main concern:
Do you all really think that I should quit this class becuase of this one incident? There is not an abundance of trainers out here..

If this is a true story, then yes I would leave the class. There are several things wrong with this situation:
1 - A dog that has to wear a muzzle does not belong off leash in public ever, much less around a bunch of other dogs.
2 - Basic obedience in a group setting is not a great idea since it really adds too much distraction before the dog is ready for it.
Since you said your GSD is 3 and you're just now working on training, I'll assume your real new to this and I would recommend you get a training tape from Ed and read his website. There is so much to learn that you could really benefit from a few hours of reading.

I don't know much about GSD's or Schutzhund training, I raise Hunting dogs. But If you ask me, I say give your dog a pat on the head. After all he did you a big favor, expecially if that dog had'nt had a muzzle on. Its not dog agression if its prevoked, just defence. He was just doing what comes natural to all dogs, defending the pack. He views you as a part of his pack, so he was defending you. Let that woman give all the dirty looks she wants. You should not feel bad, as your dog did the right thing, hers is the one that screwed up. Shoot, if it were me and she copped and aditude I would have told her "next time I wont pull my dog off".

Eds DVDs are worth their weight in gold, also because I am a very visual person it's great....in addition to reinforce someone watching me and teaching me to be more confident a good trainer is so worth it. My litmus test is if the trainer is familiar with Ed and his techniques. I travel almost an hour to get to him but it is worth it to me...look hard you will be happy with the results between the DVDs an a qualified one on one trainer...best to you

Thank you Valerie for your post!
Yes, Mr. Frawley's videos are excellent! I have "eight weeks to eight months", and "basic obedience", and I've enjoyed them immensely!
I've only been taking dog classes for 3 years; my one dog is in novice obedience, and my puppy in beginner obedience. I was stuck in a rut there because the last small town we lived in offered only beginner obedience and nothing else so my dog had to take that over, and over....So that is why my dog is 3+ years old and we are still in novice classes. I would love to find a trainer that would work with us one on one (like you have!)and avoid group classes, but I've heard of nothing here yet.

No, his dog should have stayed in his down. If it were my dog I would have brought him back and corrected him on breaking a stay. Stay is at my discretion not his; it’s the handler’s job to determine what a threat is and how to respond.

And here I was thinking I might be able to help you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Sorry, but the only trainers I know of on the Island are in agility. There are other people on this board from BC, though- hopefully someone might know more.
Beautiful place to live, though- I looove the drive north from Nanaimo. No better fishing than Campbell River, and no better storm watching than Tofino!

Hmm... I would totally agree if his dog were fully obedience trained and had some foundation in protection training. But without having a guard/watch/bark/attack command, what should he have done? Ran behind his dog and told his dog to stand up? I'm confused. Some people say that when a dog that is told to sit by his master's side, but instead bites someone in the face for getting to close, the dog did nothing wrong. But when an obviously threatening dog runs up with bad intentions, the dog is supposed to hold his stay?
Personally... were I in his shoes, I would have given my dog a reminder that he was supposed to stay and I would have run the Mal off myself. But if the guy was standing there like a deer in the headlights, isn't it a good thing that his dog rose to the challenge and protected his owner? Maybe his dog sensed the owner's panic?
