Kirsty,
My initial post said the guy had had the dog for 2 years - But upon talking to the guy it turns out to have been 8 months - check my most recent post.
The web link of the dog says that he'd be 20months on 08.08.05, it is now 21.11.05, so he'll basically be 2yo in 2wks time.
Hope that clears things up.
Bottom line. . . .test the dog in a serious way prior to purchase.
They may come highly regarded, but that doesn't mean much honestly.
Test the dog yourself, or with someone who is NOT the dog's trainer. That is vital. It is very easy to fake a dog's work with his trainer or with a decoy that he works with on a daily basis.
Test the dog off-lead while wearing a muzzle, and in an unfamiliar place. If the dog will engage you in defense of his handler it might be worth the money. If the dog doesn't look committed to kicking your butt, find another dog.

For that price you should be getting a good dog. I cant believe the high price... .amazing!
I would make sure that evrything is put down in some sort of contract before you buy him and that everything the guy is saying is put down in writing. If things dont work out do you get a refund on your money or will the guy just rehome him again? I'd sure check out all the small letters and words in the agreement. Its not being distrustful about someone its playing safe. Is there a trial periode of a mth or so to see how he gets on? If so make sure you know who is responsible for any "incident or damage" done in this periode et etc.

I *always* advise prospective ppd buyers to take their own decoy and test the dog under hard, real world conditions - you'd be amazed at the number of so-called "ppd's" that fail a hard test by even a mid-level decoy.
Let the buyer beware......

I agree completely with testing him out outside of his turf, I would say that you probably don’t want to do the attack on his handler that you should have someone you know do it. I wouldn't want my new dog’s first encounter with me to be me trying to kill his handler...
I've personally tested titled dogs that I've bought and never had an issue with bonding after. It would be the rare dog that can hold a grudge, or build that negative of an association with you after one encounter.
In the case where you have no decoy, it's better than not testing the dog at all.
Reinier,
I don't think that I "assume" anything - I do this for a living and provide dogs to clients in almost a dozen countries now, and several of those countries are either at war or have a crime rate that is very high. Hence those clients come to me.
At my level, this is not a sport, it is not a game, it is life or death and my clients depend on me to provide them with a dog that's the real thing. So my test weeds out the weak dogs, the ones that would retreat under real world pressure. And I have *never* had a dog returned to me because it failed to protect it owner or any nerve issue - so I'd say that my testing works just fine, thank you.
My buyers have plenty of knowledge on how this works, because I spend a lot of time teaching them and demonstrating just what a real dog can do. And I've had multiple clients come to me after seeing dogs fail at some of the less serious "ppd" trainers.
Please stop assuming that you know *anything* about my clients, or the dogs that I train and sell.
It's about professionalism. And pictures of PPD's and kids on a site are a lame advertising device usually used by amateurs and show that the vendor is not serious ( and usually not knowledgeable, either ) about their dogs.
And I'm in agreement with Jeff there, photo's like that would be an instants disqualification for the purchase of a serious PPD in my book.
You mean pics of kids with ppd's, like your link to capitalcanine? when you go to available dogs page there's the obligatory pic of a kid sitting on a malinois ppd. Gee, I guess that's "instant disqualification for the purchase of a serious ppd" in your book.
