well .it does look like an allergy for sure
Or BURNS! Groomers shampoo the dog, then start rinsing from the head back. You can almost see the rinse pattern of "too hot" water that wasn't tested before beginning to rinse the dog. Woosh woosh around the ears and then a line straight down the back (about the exact width of a rinse nozzle spray).
Your poor poor baby! Burns would certainly be very painful...which explains her very extreme reaction, more extreme than one would think from an allergic reaction.
An allergy to the shampoo would present anywhere the shampoo penetrated. Second degree burns would cause the redness and blistering (now exposed scabs)one can see in those pics.
Oh the poor thing! Thank goodness you've got some medication for her! I'd be fit to be tied!

Will,
For future baths, I'd go with a home-made shampoo where you can control the ingredients 100%. Ed has a nice, benign shampoo formula posted on this site.
I searched the site for this shampoo but can't find it under any of the categories. I did however, in my search, stumble across an article Ed wrote about Rimadyl and after reading it I am afraid to continue giving it to her.
She has had one Rimadyl today and she is doing much better. She will actually let me touch her neck and apply the ointment without any crying at all. All the sores except one have scabbed over. There is one large sore under her chin that is still seeping a lot but much improved over last night. I am glad I didn’t wait until Monday. It was spreading fast and I think we caught it before it got real ugly.
I will definitely test a shampoo on a small area and let a couple days pass before I ever bath her again. I would absolutely love to know what Ed’s Shampoo is if anyone has the link. I won’t need it for awhile… but it can’t hurt to have it on hand when the time comes.
Thanks again Everyone

Tracy,
If that was caused by burns... There will be hell to pay. I am going to bring my dog down there and show them the damage she suffered.
If it was an allergy... I can accept that. How could they have known, but if those are burns. Man... I don't even want to think about it what I will do.
I might follow up with her regular vet on Monday just to get his opinion. He wanted me to check in anyway.

Definitely ask the vet on Monday, and watch when you go to visit how the groomer rinses the dogs. Find out if they have a water-temperature regulator. Good luck, and I am glad she is feeling better today!

I would just start washing my own dogs. I really don't want strangers handling my dog anyway. I use a plastic kiddy pool from Walmart, a plastic stool, swim trunks and flipflops. I put hot and cold water taps out side. I place the stool and the dog in the pool and make no attemp to stay dry. My dogs seem to enjoy it. For nail clipping I use treats. clip a nail, treat, clip a nail, treat and so on.

Dennis, with the 3-4 inches of snow we have here, that whole idea really isn't too appealing.
For what it is worth, I would have to go with an allergic reaction long before a burn. While it is possible, I just don't see it causing it in that pattern. Groomers are hands on as well, so even in the case of "too hot" water I don't think you would see that much of a burn. They would be burning themselves.

Deanna - I thought you Mainards were a tough flinty bunch and a little weather didn't bother you guys
I think your right it looks like a reaction. are there any shampoos you would stay clear of? I've been using "Suave Lavander" only because its cheap and the whole family uses it.

This is a good formula (natch! with good ingredients for normal skin as well as the common skin issues. I use a homemade recipe that's almost exactly the same and I've liked it for years.
One thing, though, for right now: Unless the vet says otherwise, I'd use nothing but a plain-water rinse until the eruptions and scratches are healed. Just my own take on it.
The wounds look so much like chemical burns that I'd want them well-rinsed (which I am positive the vet did) and then with nothing "foreign" on them until they're all better. The vet may even say to skip baths totally for now, but I'm betting s/he will say that a warm-water rinse and a soft patting-dry (no rubbing) is good.
(And vinegar, of course, would be an irritant for the present.)
I hope you'll keep us posted. I feel so bad for the dog after seeing those photos.

Thank you Terry and Connie –
Per the vet and my mutual feelings… there will be no baths for quite some time although I will test Ed’s recipe on a small spot when the time comes and wait a few days to see if she shows any reaction.
I bought distilled water and heated it to about 100 degrees and just patted her sores with a sterile cloth. She is on the mend now that treatment has been started. I have heard plenty about allergies… but never imagined it to be like that.
Now she looks like the hairless cat on Austin Powers… and I love her even more.
