I was in sandy land from Jan 03-Aug03, as a cop with the Air force. I think it is horrible they are letting her have that dog. They are needed over there and she has her own pets at home to help her heal. If she is thinking not of her fellow troops, why doesn't she think of the dog? He is a working dog, and is doing what he was bred to do. My own pet dog is in training right now and I would never tell him he couldn't work anymore so he could sit in the house and do nothing with me..... This is just all really sad. I think she should have a chance to get the dog in seven years or whenever he does retire, until then let him do his job and save lives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
She should be ashamed of herself. I briefly considered joining the military after high school, but I realized quickly that I did not have the proper temperment for the job. You are supposed to put the mission/job you are given to do first and there is no room for sentiment. Sounds to me like this woman should have given more thought to that before joining. To me,she is a real embarressment. Now, who's to say that dog is going to be happy sitting around all day without a job to do? I wonder if she gave any thought to that.
In closing, I would like to say thank you to all who serve or have served in the military. It's because of people like you that we are free here and we don't have a bunch of people like members of the Taliban over here taking away our personal freedoms.
I realize some feel the dog still has a job to do in Iraq... but dogs come a dime a dozen.
Then let her get another one that hasn't already been trained. Should only set you back about 1.2 cents.

She deserves more compensation for her duty
Agreed, but this is the wrong way to do it.

Right. But you can control it. This is commonly referred to as discipline.
I wouldn't refer to her as an embarassment; I think she made a very bad judgment call. Personal comfort decisions are rarely the right ones to make. That said, Congress has acted, and we can only hope that they will undertake similarly sympathetic measures when caring for the hundreds of thousands of other vets who will be physically and emotionally shattered by the time the GWOT is won.
My posts reflect my own opinions, and not those of the Marine Corps or the United States.
I agree 100% with Iain here. This women made the decision to serve. She is not an embarassment to anyone. We may not agree with her decision to keep her dog when it chould be saving more soldiers, but that does not make her an embarassment. The fact is she is a wounded war veteran and in my book thats defined as RESPECT !!
