Thanks Ian, as they're relatively inexpensive I think I'll try one and see how he is on one and take him to class with it. The only trouble is if he starts to pull towards other dogs or is noticed to have tension in the lead whilst heeling I know the trainer will say he needs a 'halti' and I'm not going there, 'no way'

Quick question on prongs....
what makes the Sprenger's better than the petsmart ones other than build quality? Does it have a different effect on the dog or something?
Also, has anyone ever used the little rubber caps on their prong that the pet stores sell to "soften" the blow? Would they be good for particularly soft dogs that don't need much correction? Or does it not matter?
I've been using a PetSmart prong for a while, the chrome plating is starting to peel off around the rings that the leash clasps onto, time to buy a new one soon.
Now I'm debating wether I should go with the smaller links as someone suggested. Under serious distraction the prong I have doesn't have a whole lot of effect on my dog, but under minor distractions he doesn't need much correction at all.

While I was going through and reading this topic, I had to jump in.
I have a Husky mix who always wants to pull, so I have to use a prong; she'll pull my arm out of my socket if I don't use one. (exaggerating a bit here)
Now I don't know if anyone else has gone through this, but when people see me walking her with the prong, I get a lot of dirty looks, and snide remarks about how awful the collar is and looks.
When I'm out walking her in public places where there are lots of people, I just put a bandanna around the prong.
That solves getting dirty looks from the uneducated and inexperienced, and I can enjoy my walk with my dog without rude people glaring at me. Problem solved.

This is sorta what I'm afraid of. The Petsmart I got to and work at is in a "nicer" part of town (people drive Bentleys, Rolls Royce, Porsche...). These people and the store trainer are very willing to let you know their disgust with what you're doing and I'm not one to take it very lightly either.
I need to make up little "business cards" that have Prong Collar info on them. When someone gives me a bad look, I'll slip them a card and tell them to read it and say, "These are the primary reasons why I use this collar." Then I'll tell them that I put it on myself (leg AND neck) first and that I would never imagine hurting any animal. See how that goes...

The Sprenger is made of solid stainless, as opposed to the nickel plated ones made by Aspen (the petco/smart knockoffs), which is why yours is flaking. And take a new Sprenger collar and rub a link over your arm, and then do it with a knockoff. You'll find the tips of the Sprenger prong are machined much better, and are almost "soft". The cheap ones are pretty bluntly cut and tend to snag and be sharper.
And definitely the build quality is higher, the Sprenger uses solid plates as opposed to those long clip looking ends on the Aspen (which I've seen fail and fall apart more than once).

You mean the coiled things that my dogs hair gets stuck in n makes me feel bad when I take it off along with some of his hair? Yeah that's a good reason for the sprenger alone if it solves that problem.
So the PetCo and PetSmart ones are the same? My friend got hers at PetCo, I got mine at PetSmart, mine's easier to put on/off than hers, but I guess it could be machining tollerences coming into play there. I'll be buying one of the sprenger's soon.

re: Sprenger collars
I just bought one this weekend after comparing them directly to the Aspen brand. The difference in quality is impressive - particularly the feel of the prong ends. They appear to be more comfortable for a dog.

Mike,
Have you heard of the "Good Dog" collar; they're made by Tripple Crown? These work very similar to a prong, but the collar is made of a hard plastic. There was another thread that was talking about them in December. Opinions vary on these, but I've used them on some of the dogs I have trained, and they worked just as good as the prong. I don't own one, because I have a prong, but these look a lot less intimidating to beginners vs. the prong, and it serves the same purpose.

Thanks Mundy, I'm not crazy about the triple crown's. I've been using the prong on my boy for almost a year and it's great, I was just curious what the benefit of the sprenger brand is over the el-cheapo petsmart brand My boy has a hard time responding to the prong on some serious distractions, I wouldn't trust anything less to keep him under control.

The cheap brands sometimes have square ends on the prongs rather than rounded which can irritate or puncture skin if they are not covered with a rubber cap. The rubber caps are an unnecessary expense for a prong collar with rounded ends. It doesn't change the intensity of the correction at all.
The links of the cheap prongs do bend, which can bind up the collar and make it ineffective or cause the collar to pop off.
A soft dog may benefit from a larger link size, a hard dog certainly benefits from a smaller link size. I go down to a micro prong for bull breeds 20 - 60lb, but I also have a safety back-up just in case and I use a fine prong for larger dogs. I haven't used a medium, large or XL prong for ages as I find them on the clumsy side.
