I'm so glad to hear that the breeder is willing to pay for the medical bills I am glad that there are some stand-up guys still around.

Yes, if he's made it to day five, things are looking good at this point ( if it's Parvo, that is )!
Matt, so you don't have to do the "take the dog home only to find out that he's still sick" routine, make sure that if they're releasing the dog to your care that he's been drinking fluids and has held down at least soft food - that'll be a big time saver for you.
Ok, thank you Will!

Watery diarrhea sure sounds like giardia, as Cindy mentioned. It can be difficult to pick up. Insist on a live smear stool test. Sometimes you have to check it for a few days in a row to catch them shedding the protozoa. Sure hope your pup gets on the mend fast, Matt.

I have a question, never having dealt with parvo (other than having done one vaccination on my dog as a pup)
It's been 5 days since you posted about the pup being sick. (and hopefully things are looking up up up!)
BUT...
HOW long does it take to test for parvo? Are there titers involved?
Why was your vet (as you stated previously) *thinking* it wasn't parvo" ???
I am confused. Does it take a while to get results on a parvo screen? Or do you keep testing for it over a few days like the other diseases mentioned?
Just trying to understand the situation, because from what I've heard/read here about the parvo, it hits fast and can kill fast.
Is that why its only 50/50% survival *because* they have no definitive test?

As we wait for a more medically informed answer to this, in my
experience with Parvo - (two dogs had it, one was lost, one
survived):
Parvo acts fast/kills fast - YES
They have no definitive test? - There IS a parvo test, and it's very accurate
The key to bringing up the survival rate - and again, this is
my own personal experience, and not medical advice is,
Quick medical response at the first signs - and especially
if the diarhea smells/looks bloody!
God Bless,
Martin

I am confused. Does it take a while to get results on a parvo screen? Or do you keep testing for it over a few days like the other diseases mentioned?
QUOTE from http://www.2ndchance.info/parvo.htm
Diagnosis
There are many other virus and bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea in dogs. This leads to misdiagnosis where not all cases of “Parvo” in puppies and adults are actually due to this virus. Although symptoms can be very suggestive of Parvo, true diagnosis requires an antibody test that detects the actual parvovirus in stool samples. The test is an ELISA test or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Early in the disease, this test can be negative. Virus isolation is possible but the procedure is quite expensive and rarely done. In practice, the presence of an acute hemorrhagic diarrhea is usually all that is required for a tentative diagnosis of parvovirus. END QUOTE
It does kill fast, which is why 5 days is a good sign, IF it's Parvo. The high morbidity rate, from what I understand, is often a result of initial failure to get IV fluids started (because of not recognizing the severity of the illness).

My vet was quick to test. She told me - maybe due to her experience
or something - that the earier testing is done to parvo test,
the better chance the dog has.
A negative result eary on in Parvo testing just proves the
point that a GREAT vet is really key in the life of our dogs.
One who is not too proud to "re-test" - even at their OWN
expense - for Parvo if symptoms persist.
God Bless,
Martin

Thanks for posting the clarification (s).
There are so many variables when dealing with disease.
But it sounds like Matt, you are dedicated and determined to do (and are doing) the next right thing in this case, ie: IV, hospital, etc. There's a lot to be said for this, as you know, you *could* have opted to keep the pup at home and "done your best" but you took it a step further, moving in the direction of the best care.
I am leaning towards this pup's recovery and it's strengthening immune system. Seems like you got a fighter!

The reason why they can't get a definitive answer on the Parvo testing, is because he had his second set of vaccinations a week ago. They told me that he will still have a false positive for upto 2 weeks after the vaccination.

Now that's a bummer, but makes perfect sense.
How's he doing? How's his energy level? How are you and your
family doing, and taking all this?
God Bless,
Martin
