One way to stop it would be this: John Q Public comes up with his daughter in tow asking to pet your dog. You can say" "Why yes, & if you wish to have your daughter in the picture it will merely cost $25.00 per pet. The other thing that works is to say"sorry, pups in training, & while in training she is unable to intreract with othersw
When I had my GSD Malamute cross my answer to the "Does he bite?" question was "Not usually." This was generally enough to deter people. On occasion, with children who asked, I would use the opportunity to teach them how to pet a strange (to them) dog properly, asking permisson of the owner, not staring the dog directly in the eyes, being calm and confident and petting the dog on the chest or side rather than on top of the head or back.
I'm aware of that, Sandy...what I'm trying to say is, if I was a Pit Bull owner, perhaps I'd be more concerned about my breed being 'avoided' as they *should* be friendly, while the proper GSD temperament is ALOOF and suspicious of strangers. Hence, I am not overly concerned about telling the public that my dog is friendly...it's not as if I can back up my statement.
Oh, I see what you're saying about the pitbull! Makes sense. With the GSD, like you, I also like their being aloof and suspicious of strangers - ever watchful. I think it's a lot of what makes a German Shepherd, a German Shepherd, and has always made me proud of the ones I've owned.
Hey. I just thought I'd add that I don't have a problem w/people being wary, even afraid of my dog. I don't need anyone to like my dog. I only have a problem w/people singling me/my dog out and throwing us out of a park and no one else. That alone would be bad enough but add to that Gunnar's obedient and gentle nature, well I just want to slap someone !!

I agree with you 100%. To be singled out is absolutely an ignorant thing to do. Especially when there is another dog acting stupid, but it is small so they do not think it would be an issue.
There is also a T-shirt you can get, it says "BARK OFF"
or "If I throw a stick, will you leave??"
Hee hee, but I like the pink one also.
Have to look for one of those.
