This morning I was sitting on the tailgate of my truck and the dogs were romping in the soccer/baseball fields. A cop pulled up, got out of his car and came over to me, sat on the tailgate and asked me if I knew the park was off-limits to dogs. I said that I did, and offered him a cup of coffee from my thermos. He accepted. We watched the dogs. Every now and again I bellowed some random command. We chatted about stuff. He finished his coffee, said that he wished his dog was that well trained, wished me a good day, and left.
What a fabulous way to start the day ! I'm sooooo jealous of you guys w/2 and 3 GSDs. By the way Mike, you mentioned "hopp" in an earlier post. Assuming this was not a typo for "hop", did you mean huepfen?
And if it is huepfen...what does that mean ...duuuhhhh

Owners of small dogs do not get a pass. My wife was delivering meals on wheels to a retired couple. She knocked on the door, the owner opened the door and a daschund charged out, jumped up and bit her on the knee. It hurt, she went to the doctor, and a workman's medical claim was generated. Owners of small dogs do not get to be stupid.

What I've done at the park to is look for one of the unused ball fields to work the dogs. Henrico County Virginia's Dorey Park is exceptionaly large with quite a number of soccer, softball and Equistrian fields. The caged in tennis courts are also great for training. There is a leash rule for the dogs but the staff and police look the other way if it looks like you got positve control of your dog, Henrico County Police train out there as well

Ms. Troiano,
Just my way of saying to the dogs, 'get in the bed of the truck.' 'Hop' for 'jump up in there and stay.'

Andrew,
I guess unfortunely I have to go into more detail, so that you don't get too confused on the reality of the situation.
The owner of the pomeranian did not come cause he was scared, he sat on the bench ,in a very relaxing way, looked over at us and DID NOT ONCE RECALL HIS DOG! did not adress any words to us!!! HELLO!, I have a king Charles and if I saw him run towards 3 large dogs my responsibility is his safety! I would have gotten my butt off that bench so fast that no one else could have picked him up for us.I was not nervous one bit about my dogs , we have a small dog that runs with all 3 of my shepherds ,so I knew in some ways the worst they would have done(hope) is step on the Pomeranian or pawed at it. I said those words to him because he made no attempt to move his butt for his dog and in my mind he does not deserve his dog for putting him in danger.I train my dogs everychance I get and their obedience is such that I can train them on a down together.I do everything else seperate but we were taking pictures of them that day, and if you look at my profile you can click on the photobucket link and see the photo we took of that day. That is why they were in a long down I thought they look very good on their down for the pictures ,hey I am going to go down the field
and see how well they will keep their downs. So Andrew don't be so quick to jump and accuse me of being unkind to an undeserving individual. He got the comment he derserved.I am not a mean unkind person but to let your dog enter a danger zone and not be concerned for one second, what do you think I should have told him, " Good day!" He needed to have his eyes opened up, cause he was sleeping at the wheel!
