Diana -
Speaking as an owner of two pit bulls and two ferrets and two cats (and a partridge in a pear tree LOL), those ferrets are rascally weasels...they are forever biting at our toes and need to be corrected, they seem to be drawn to toes - so yes I can see it. As far as a puppy goes I can see a puppy chewing on anything!!!!
Great now I have dangerous dogs AND WEASELS....

Diana, yeah, I thought maybe they were hiding something, but I do think it's possible, maybe not probable, that the ferret did it. We have to remember just how tiny these toes were. It does seem more likely that it was the pup, but I've encountered ferrets who do their fair share of chewing on fingers...so why not toes? A captive victim? Who knows what REALLY happened...
Val, my pleasure. I HATE when people who seem nice at first ask me what kind of dogs I have, b/c I just KNOW they're gonna say something stupid when I tell them...and then I won't like them anymore, lol! Seriously, though, if more 'normal' people would do their homework, get ACCURATE info on the breed, and say "F" the stereotypes, Pit Bulls would have a better chance. It's just that no one wants to deal with the BS associated with having one...except loonies like us;-). I do understand it; my neighbors stopped speaking to me when I got mine, even though I had to put up a high privacy fence to keep my GSD from lunging at faces peering over the top. Real fair, huh? Not that I want people to be afraid of my dog...but sheesh. Let's be honest folks...my GSD-bites. My Chihuahua-bites. My Pit Bull-has not bitten. (I would never say "doesn't bite" b/c I think all dogs bite...just a question of thresholds, and believing otherwise is a recipe for disaster.)
I should stay off this thread...Pit Bull discussions get me in even more trouble than usual,lol;-)

I guess my ferret didn't read the ferret manual- she never once showed interest in my toes. If she did, maybe I could have switched her to the raw diet. You're right, baby toes are teensy. I really hope they try to figure out which critter did it because they may find out a critter did NOT do it.

I just had the creepiest thought about the neglect in this case. What if it were rats which were coming out to feed at night, rather than their pets?

Even the thought of this is sad, but in a way I hope you are wrong and a critter did do it...it is hard to think of parents hurting an innocent.
Hey listen maybe your ferret can talk to my ferrets about the toe thing, my girls are aweful tired of getting the ole thump on the nose for "toe biting"

Someone else presented that possibility earlier as well. Apparently their living conditions left more than a little to be desired.
Really, I have met more than a few highly intelligent members of the bully breeds. I was being sarcastic, which doesn't always play well on-line.
It is just unfortunate for them that they seem to be the dog-of-choice for so many of society's bottom-feeders.

Diana,
You're forgetting that there are TWO variables here. The ferret could be very well versed in toe nibbling, but YOUR toes... ehhhh, she'll pass, thank you very much.

Eva, you could be right. I hope the authorities will do a thorough investigation and get the answers. It makes me sick to think about.
