Wow, Valerie, was I ever naive. I was thinking of the jolt that an e-collar gives, not thousands of volts capable of knocking a person out. I think I'll just get the plain ole baton instead. Thanks, though, for the input.

I walk my 5 1/2 month old puppy every morning at daybreak (about a mile). I never leave the house without my pepper spray and my metal flashlight (it is about 24 inches long) and without any batteries in it, is light enough to carry and if necessary to use as a weapon - doubt that it would break like a walking stick would! So far I've never had a problem with any other dog encounters, and any people that I see on the street usually cross over to the other side (don't know if they are scared of the puppy or me!). Anyway, I just feel safer with a little protection.

When I moved to the country I was looking forward to walking my dogs on the 'non busy' streets. I couldn't believe all the dogs that would run out at my dogs snarling etc. I started to take a horse whip with me on my walks. Worked great. Dog came to close he got it. Most were actually quite afraid of the stick if I hit the ground in front of them and left, going back to thier yard. Man...I live in the country and NEVER let me dogs run loose!

A buggy-whip works GREAT. It's long enough to have some reach and really sting without having the long stringy end like a lunge-whip. I've found our dressage whips are too short, though they do really smart. Loose dogs are like a plague where I live too; I also live in "the boonies" and would never consider allowing my dogs to run loose. Too many wolves, moose, catamounts, etc. but I guess my neighbors either don't care or don't think about that.

...Asp batons (and others like them) do not carry electrical charges, they are a bludgioning weapon, and the best point of contact is to strike with the tip. Keep in mind though that striking the head with an ASP is considered lethal force (regarding human contact anyway); so if you plan this kind of defense be prepared to go all the way. Tazers have laser designaters built into them so if the target is "painted" you hit it, but you need to be pretty damn quick on the draw. If you want an "electric stick/baton" get a cattle prod. They can sometimes be hard to find but try a live stock store (if there are any ) or ask a local farmer to point you in the right direction. Well, heck, I thought the ASP baton was electrical. I'm afraid there's not enough strength in my arm to hit anything hard enough to make it stop without some electrical punch behind it. Recently saw news of a cop here in Phoenix that was shooting at a pitbull charging a toddler, shot it 5 or 6 times, one bullet glanced off the PB's skull! If a 9 millimeter won't do it, I'm sure a baton in my hands would be useless. A cattle prod would be better I guess, but does a cattle prod induce electricity through the dog or just at the point of contact?
Edited to say: currently I carry pepper foam and pepper spray.

I think that was a play on the word "Mace". I know the Mace mentioned in this thread is the canned stuff, but if you want to "Get Medieval On" someone's a$$, the pictured weapon is JUST the tool to do it with. OHHHH - figured it was something that probably went over my head - WHOOSSHH

well, i ended up ordering an aluminum ASP collapsable baton. the local store reported abck to me that it would be 3-4 weeks for thier (my) shipment to arrive and to me that was unacceptable...especially with so many 'e-vendors' these days. they kindly returned my $.
i ordered the 21" aluminum (lightweight) ASP baton from officerstore.com, and it was about $75. not too expensive imho if it means that i can safely walk my dog.
the aluminum was ordered because they were out of stock on the steel ones, but after researching them for a couple of hours, i liked them. 'they' say that the even though the aluminum one is so light weight, it still has 98% of the striking force as the steel one....
hopefully, i will never have to use it...

Electrical current will travel through the entire body; that's the nature of electricity. Think about if you touch a live wire with a relatively low charge, your toes will cramp up!
Sandy, you'd be surprised at how much power can be chanelled through the baton if you use it properly. They are quite dangerous weapons.

Sandy,
I think you may be talking about a stun baton. It is electric and has been discussed before on other threads. You could probably do a search and find information on it. Hope this helps!
