Denise, if you just want the dog as a family pet, why not consider a rescue dog or an older dog that is hip certified that perhaps has been held back by a breeder? To get a decent workingline you should expect to pay around $1500.00 or as low as $750.00 for an older pup.
Unfortunately, you're paying for not only names on peds, but health. The biggest reason for working lines' superior health is the fact that they're bred for health and working ability, which often go hand in hand. A crippled hock-walker cannot work. Thus, breeders need to be very selective in choosing their breeding stock, and someone has to pay for that-the buyer.
While you may not need the best ped out there, what happens is that the people breeding so-so peds are not nearly as diligent about temperament, health, ability, etc. They don't breed an awesome dog with a mediocre pedigree (on purpose anyway-it does happen though!)
It gets slightly more complicated. Show lines have what's called a plush coat-fluffy w/an undercoat, but no feathering. Coated typically refers (in the negative, no-breeding connotation) to feathering, tufts, and lack of undercoat. Other than a lack of undercoat, working dog people generally don't care about a little fuzz. With Judy's definition of long stock coat, the tufts can be long or short, as can the feathering.
Oh, I didn't mean you were wrong...just that there are pups out there that don't fit those categories, and have a more similar coat to what the show folks call "plush." I'll see if I can find a pic.... Ripper Blaster Blaster older
These guys are kind of what I meant by plush. They may be long stock, but don't have leg feathering...who knows??? But they're the ones I was thinking of. They both have undercoats and are the products of "normal" parents, and the only coated siblings in their litters. They're both 100% Czech, and I see this type more in Czech lines than any others.
