Angelique,
I just realized That last statement insinuates you are not a good pack leader. That was not my intention at all. I think you are excellent. Apologies.

Howard, I hope you have that newspaper article, especially the picture of you and Roscoe, framed. It sure touched my heart. Looking at the pictures of Roscoe that you posted, I have to say that's my kind of GSD. He's not only beautiful, but in his face and eyes I see a steadfastness, strength, stableness, and loyalty that should show in the face of all GSDs, as plainly as it shows in Roscoe, as far as I'm concerned. Roscoe has it. I haven't seen one like him in a long time. Congratulations on having a superb GSD. I'm truly impressed, and can't express how just seeing him has made me feel.
In this picture of RJ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v620/Howard/RJ4.jpg , I see those qualities, even as a young pup that he is. It's really amazing that they show up in his face and eyes so clearly. I think you have a true Roscoe Junior.
Stay safe out there, always.

Sandy,
Thank you for those kind words. I do happen to have an 8x10 framed picture from the newspaper. My sister gave it to me as a gift. She called the newspaper photographer and had one made. It was an emotional gift as I had to relive that day upon recieving it. There were many such instances where we, as a team survived but that was the worst as I thought I lost him after hearing gun shots.
I have the actual audio tapes of the radio transmissions from that incident (all three hours of it) and I've used it as an instructional aid when training new handlers to show them that it is no game out here and they better step up when they train their dogs if they want to go home at night. It's a real eye opener to those officers who thought K9 was all glory and fun with no risk.

Howard, I can't even imagine what it would be like for a K9 handler to lose a dog in a situation like that, to one of those creeps.
That picture is great - worth a thousand words. A real proud and moving moment.
Is a civilian ever allowed to observe a K9 training session?

Howard, do you mean actually watching you train on your own turf?
I know this weekend a local pet store is having K9s and their handlers come and put on a "sample training" exhibition (which I can't wait to see), but I would gladly give up my seat in Hell to see an actual, real-life training session.
As you think, so shall you be. |

Hi Jan, Yes. Its not something that happens all the time, maybe 6-8 times a year. Usually those invited are prospective officers, dog vendors, officers' friends and family or students (High school and above, with exception for younger kids) who have an interest in law enforcement or are doing research or internships. Mostly its who you know. There are , of course, PR situations but those are mainly taken care of with a demo.

Howard, I printed the article out so I could see the picture better -- thanks for sharing it -- what a great picture of you and Roscoe. I get the impression of a bond beyond words between the two of you.
Your male pup looks like he is going to be a mirror image of him.
Enjoy -- and you and Roscoe be safe.

Great looking dogs, Howard...also, glad to see such a great dog doing PP work! I'm sure your new little ones will benefit greatly from being around Roscoe. Great looking kids, too...
I do have one question: How do you train the dog to react when he/she hears gunshots? That has always baffled me in reference to instinct and independent thinking if you know what I mean...
all the best with your new pups!
