I did use a bark collar. It worked for about a week and then he just got used to it. He's a tough doggy.
That stinks. If only there was a way...right?

Hi Gene. You don't live far from me. I'll ask my dog trainer if she can find a home for him. Since I don't know much about your dog, could you PM me with what you think would give me a decent summary of him to share with her? In a PM, I will tell you more about the trainer, geographic info, etc.

I'm not sure where you live, Gene, but I do some work with the German Sheperd Rescue of New England. If worse comes to worse and you can't find anyone, please consider giving your dog to a rescue instead of taking him to the shelter.
If you're near Judy, then I'm assuming you're in the North East. There are rescues for pretty much every state, and I'd be happy to give you some contacts. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Hi Amber,
I live in Staten Island, NY. If rescue is better than shelter then that's what I would do. I want to make sure he'll be ok. Right now I'm still trying to find a person or a family that would take him, but worse comes to worse I would give him to a rescue.
Thanks,
-Gene

Hi Gene,
I'll get the contact name for a NY rescue for you (there are a few), and I'll PM you.
I really do believe that a rescue is better than a shelter, even a no-kill one.
Amber

I re-read my post and it came off harsh, i didn't mean it that way. But, the shelters ARE full of dogs with this story and you said "and I know it was my fault because we did nothing with her as far as rank or pack structure", that was one of my points. i just hope it works out for the dog, that's all,

Look, if this guy didn't care about his dog and what happens to him, he would have dropped him off at a shelter and we would have never even heard about it. He most likely wouldn't have come to this board in the first place. He has TRIPLETS! THREE babies, all at the same time! Does anyone have any idea how much work that is? Because to properly care for a dog requires time as well. Add to that the fact that the dog has issues that need to be worked on...
If you do the math between child care for 3 babies, dog care, work and basic life tasks...I can totally see how it would add up to more hours than there are in a day...and you know who would suffer? The dog. Again, no one plans for triplets. A single baby would require some adjustment, but three?? Especially when the triplets become mobile! Come on...give the guy a break. It's not like he's saying the dog is interfering with his nightly poker game!
He loves his dog enough to have kept him this long without giving him up. He's been looking for the right family for this dog for a long time...he has a rescue person helping him screen potential adoptive families. The dog has issues that require time to fix...and he has no time. The triplets aren't just going to go away, and the dog is already 6 years old. I'm sure if he knew he was going to have triplets, he wouldn't have gotten the dog in the first place, but considering the circumstances, giving the dog the best shot at a good life full of attention for his remaining years is a good thing.
I don't advocate giving up a dog when things become "a little hectic." I think every option should be explored before deciding to rehome a dog...and 9 times out of ten, I think the dog should stay with his original family. But I think that Gene really cares about this dog and wants the dog to have a life with a family that loves him AND has time to spend with him.
It's not an ideal situation whether he keeps the dog or gives him up. But giving him to a family without the constraints that Gene has gives the dog the best chance for a happy life, IMO. I think that this must be a heartbreaking decision for Gene, and implying that he's indifferent to the dog's needs, or just throwing him away is just mean AND unjustified.
