Jery, that's fine. I NEVER try to sell to departments because of their regulations, and I actually refrain from advertising a dog, should I have one available, in places that LE frequent, as it's a big headache when they find out that tossing a dog some kibble and yearly vaccinations are not what I want for any dog I have any say in placing. And I could not care less about "most LEOs" and what they care about. I've never bred a dog in my life and if I did, I would be just as selective in placing pups. These are living beings, people!!!
Unfortunately, though, my taste in dogs is often closer to what LE likes than sport people, or pet people, so we must interact from time to time. It just so happened that a bunch of them were hounding (ooh-good pun, lol) me about this particular dog, and got a wee bit miffed that I actually cared what happened to him after he left my home. The person who finally ended up with him was actually drawn to him BECAUSE of my crazy ad and sales contract-said it reminded them of their old puppy contract back when they used to breed. Crazy people unite!
This thread was not about what LE cares about and who they want to deal with. This thread was about how sad it is that MWDs and PSDs give us so much, and get so little in return, ie SD for life, and aren't really kept in ideal condition, (IMO). I'm just one small person trying to make sure that the dogs' lives I touch turn out a little better than that, so if that offends someone, or threatens their "rights," then they simply can refrain from purchasing a dog from me.
I tried to edit something in, but too much time had passed. Apparently, people take it personally when someone remarks about not selling a dog to someone who happens to be LE. I do not solicit any LE, nor am I even in business, really. Occasionally, I happen upon a dog I cannot keep, or someone asks me to sell for them.
Since 2 officers have felt compelled to give their side, I must've given a wrong impression somewhere. To clarify, if I sell a dog, I judge the person buying the dog. Not every dept. is the same. 4/5 of Xander's litter went to LE personnel, and one to military. Not to say that they'll end up on the street, but just to make the point that I am not discriminating against LEs at all, so no rebuttal is needed . If the dept allows them to care for a dog in the manner I deem appropriate, then they're welcome to them. If the dept. limits handler involvement in feeding and healthcare, then, I'm sorry, but I won't sell the dog to them, as I feel it isn't in the best interest of the DOG, who is my main concern.
Jenni,
No detailed response needed, as I understand where you are coming from. I was just giving my personal input, and did not, as I stated, want to upset anyone. I am glad that you think that highley of the dogs you come in contact with. I agree with what you have said, and just wanted to give ya an opinion as an LEO and that there are many dogs out there that would suit departments without any stipulations on the dog.
those that hide will be found, those that run will be bitten
