Eileen, Mr. Willie needs a STRICT Groundwork protocol all day/every day, until you all decide whether or not you've bitten off more than you can chew (no pun intended) -- I don't think he needs to be euthanized at all, but I DO believe he needs proper management, training & handling, which MAY not be easily accomplished by your particular family (???)
If you are not already living by the following rules, I'd start TODAY and see if Willie has made progress after 2 weeks -- If not, you might consider contacting a good pitbull rescue for evaluation & possible re-homing with a very terrier-savvy owner...

I think it might be painful because the only time he threatened me was when he had been chewing on a corncob- by the way, is that OK
No this is not okay. NEVER let your dog have corn cob. THere are threads on this board about sick dogs and near death experiences for dogs relating to corn cobs.
if Willie ever bit again I would feel responsible because I didn't have the heart to put him down and took the easy out.
IMO rehabing a dog that has not had proper training after a bite is not the easy way out. It will be harder than putting the dog down.

Hi. Willie had the tooth removed and, after a consult with one of Cornell Univ.'s finest, they went ahead w/ neutering him. The tooth was much worse than his initial vet check had shown. I wish they had suggested to extract it then. He's still pretty groggy because of the pain meds so I'll be sleeping next to his cage tonight. I have high hopes that we'll come through this well.
Anyone have an opinion?- Willie's nose and paws feel cold. This is normal in people after anesthesia so I assume it's true in dogs. I have him covered. He's not shivering and his temp. seems normal. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear that the bad tooth is out, hopefully that will help his temperament.
Anesthesia does mess up temp. regulation in dogs so I wouldn't worry about the cold extremities right now as long as he's not shivering. If the inside of his mouth under his lips are cold you need to do something to get him warmer. Your body heat, heat lamp, heat pad, or hot water bottles will work.
Thanks for the update!

Eileen, thanks so much for the update. Mr. Will'e will feel SO much better without that nasty old tooth in his head. Thank goodness you took him in and got it checked out! Let us know how the rank reduction training goes.

Dogs shiver to help keep and raise their body temp up. They are like humans in that respect. Shivering would be a perfectly normal response as well when coming out of anesthesia.....
However, it is perfectly normal for the dog to have cool limbs after surgery.
Like was stated before....blankets (warm them in the dryer a bit), water bottles ect... can help to keep the dog warmer while he is recuperating.
I an glad to hear that things are looking up....

Thanks for the update, Eileen, and thank you for being so wonderful to Mr. Willie -- Good riddance to that BAD tooth (and to all his unnecessary testosterone too)...
If you follow Ed Frawley's Groundwork article & Basic Obedience DVD everything should improve rather quickly, IMHO

Thanks. Update to the update- Willie will probably have to go a specialist to finish removing all the tooth. It seems that the root needs to go so it was beyond the vet's experience. He is doing very well! Almost too much so- today he was back to threatening Ally and even my son. I think he was beig protective of his food- no one but Duane or I will feed him or let antone near him until his bowl is taken away. Willie went right into his cage and was covered after I had corrected him.

Hi, again, after a long lapse. Willie has been doing over-all really well- until today. While nobody was home he somehow houdinied himself from a tether we've been using in the kitchen so he did't have to be penned all day and he killed 3 kittens we were fostering. I know terriers were bred to hunt rodents but this was too much for my daughters. I need to find him a new home. Any help or suggestion will be appreciated. I'm upset about the babies and having to find Willie a new home. He's neutered, current on all vacs and chipped. Thanks,Eileen
