Just my experience, but I totally saturate the cotton ball with the solution, and clean that way rather than gushing it down his ear canal.Have you tried doing it this way? It's a happy medium for us.
I have tried it that way but can never seem to get into those little areas where the dirt hides. I find the squirt (warmed up) with the ear massage loosens the debris better for me; with that being said my dog has some of the tightest ear grooves(what is the correct name for those swirls and twirls leading into the ear canal?)I've ever seen.
Yeah, if the dirt and muck is particularly unwilling to leave the ear, I just squeeze the cotton ball to get some juice in there. I don't know why, but my dogs really hate it any other way. Whatever works, I guess. I am sympathetic to them, though, I imagine it must feel pretty creepy to have liquid squirted into your ear.
For the really hard to reach spots (NOT deep in the ear canal) I just use Q-tips saturated with the ear juice, as well. Gets all those lovely nooks and crannies.

Wows Right! Thats a very cool website, thanks Carol! I especially enjoyed the interactive animation about how to clean the ears: http://www.newmanveterinary.com/Ears.html#Ototoxicity
Actually, that's one of the best websites I've seen.

Ditto!
The only part they left out was "stand back," which I always add after the squooshing the ear around.... because when you let go, the dog WILL shake it out. It's perfect (IME) for dislodging matter and moving it to the ear flap with no poking around inside the ear by me.
