He is stopping what he is doing in the first part because he is not in an excited state he is in a calm, submissive yet curious, what can I do now cuz I am bored state...this is the best teaching time.
The second part is that he has been allowed to become "a monster" so to speak and you will not be able to get his attention to teach him anything.
Therefore (and I know he is a pup) you need to be sure to be able to "see" when it is coming and get him doing something acceptable before he gets into the "I am gonna pester you til I get what I want" mode.

Yes, I stole that sound many years ago too. Mine is more like TSST. It does seem to stand out from the background chatter (you know, like on the Charlie Brown cartoons, where adults speaking is represented by a Wee Wah Waw Wah noise).

Then I watched his show while surfing one day, did a internet search and figured out he pretty much knows behavior in dogs. But I still HATE that noise.

Hi Kori,
I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but as KB is still quite young have you tried the 'exclusion' method?
When he starts nipping too much, give him a firm 'no'. If he still continues, get up with a loud, disgruntled 'huff' and storm out of the room/yard in a dramatic manner, leaving him alone for 2-3 mins.
At this age he still wants to be with his pack all the time, and a dramatic exit shows him that nipping sends you away. Repeating this a few times can quickly register in their brain that nipping isn't on. Worked for Teagan
Might be worth a try.
