I would think that most of us here either have, do or will give of our time, energy or money to help out those dogs that can't help themselves.
Worrying about our own, or putting our own ahead of those in shelters doesn't ADD to the problem and is certainly not irresponsible!

That is not the impression that she gives. She clearly says she cares about only her dogs

Luckily there are people that care about all dogs to save those that aren't lucky enough to have a good home
That's funny! You just described Jenni. Thank you, Michael. LOL.
Thanks, Lee. Glad to see someone else was as baffled by that logic as I. LOVE YOUR NEW PIC. Awesome!
Colleen, to put your mind at ease; my dogs are all provided for in my will, and they will be paid for by my trust, in the care of trustees which I have appointed for them. Aren't I irresponsible?
Unlikely that they'll be in shelters ever AGAIN (yes, I did say again...as apparently you assume I don't have any rescues. WRONG)
Wasn't this thread about hw prev?

Colleen,
If even half the owners out there gave as much time, thought, energy, and care to their dogs, as Jenni does to hers, you wouldn't see so many abandoned animals being euthanized in shelters.
And as an FYI, Jenni took in a forum member's GSD, a dog with issues, had him flown to her, worked with him and found him a home. Do a search on "Stark"...hell, look at Jenni's posts...and you'll see that she has a very big, caring heart towards dogs other than her own.

Thanks Jenni!
I am with you 150%! I do not use hw "preventative" on my dogs, they are tested regularily.
I also do not feel I need to give my dogs poison to keep someone else's dog from contracting hw. If their dog can contract hw even by using the preventative than what does it matter if I'm using it on my dogs or not?
I do put MY dogs above other people's dogs! Call me irresponsible, but my dogs are healthy (knock on wood!)and if my neighbor down the street shoots his dogs up with every vaccine under the sun, feeds kibbles & bits and gives his dog hw poison - that is HIS business just as what I do is mine. There is no law that says I must give my dog hw preventative and even my vet has no issue with what I do.
I'm not going to give MY dog something I don't believe in to prevent someone else's dog from contracting something they've never looked into. I do not expect someone else to neuter their dog to keep MY dog from getting pregnant either...

Perhaps you should all go back and read exactly what I wrote. At no time did I "apparently assume" anything. At no time did I ever say she should give her dogs hw prev. She asked for opinions and I told of my experience.

Let me start off by saying this is in NO WAY directed at any one particular member....but....Can we PLEASE stick to the original topic of Heartworm.....who cares who asked who for what and who cares what may have been pretty much misinterpreted in this thread.
This is a training and advice forum about dogs and the overall care for dogs.
(yes, I am guilty of it as well which is why I am hesitant to even post)
But:
It is tiring to come here and have to read through all the crap in order to read about the original post.
I really do not mean to offend anyone, so I apologize if I did, but straying from the OP seems to be happening a lot lately.
This topic is one I find interesting and would probably be able to gain some great information from it, but now it is one that I do not even want to read anymore.

OK, Colleen, this is what you said;
Not all rescue dogs are unhealthy. Some have had excellent care but unfortunately become too old to breed and the breeders no longer want them because they are no longer useful. Worrying about your own is selfish and irresponsible. Attitudes like that are why thousands of animals are needlessly euthanized every year.
I've worked in rescue and I've got to say that almost all dogs that are "used as breeders" and then dumped to shelters when they are too old to breed have almost never ever had excellent care in their life. I don't know where you came up with that idea.
And I do worry about my own dogs first. So I guess Jenni isn't the only one.
>>>
I do have mine on Heartworm preventative, and here's why:
There's quite a bit of HW where I live and many many vectors for the worm, from coyotes to foxes to feral dogs. Both of my dogs are short haired, like to be outside in good weather, and were both rescues not in the best of health when adopted.
I use Interceptor, and it doesn't seem to bother my dogs, and I have them on it year round.
>>>
This is a personal decision for each person to make.
I don't jump down Jenni's throat because her decision is different from mine.
Oh, and while I'm at it, did you at all notice the part where Jenni said she has her dogs tested every 6 months? I would think that her extremely healthy dogs would be an unlikely vector to spread hw to other dogs.
And sarcastic, snotty remarks are never helpful to anyone. A REASONED opinion why you prefer to use heartworm preventative would have been much more useful to the OP.

A HUGE ditto. First I started getting PMs. Then I logged on to see how in the name of anyhing a heartworm thread could be generating PMs from disgusted members.
It's amazing! We have the best board I know and the most knowledgable members I see anywhere!
There must be a full moon.
Back to the O.P., PLEASE!
I've been reading the thread on rabies vaccines and also looking at some websites of breeders that raise puppies holistically. Raw feed, minimal vax if any, but I also noticed that quit a few of them do not use heartworm preventatives either. I would like to hear everyones thoughts on that and if you do use hw preventative or not. Where I am you are pretty much guarenteed a case of heartworms if you don't use it.
