I understand the reason but I think it is insane that they would rather see the dog sit in a kennel then live in a home that will provide the dog with all the exercise and training they need.
I just wanted to say that our rescue has a long waiting list of potential adopters (more adopters than dogs available for adoption) so they can afford to pick only the people with fences to be on the safe side. Our local shelter, however, does not have a fence requirement...maybe because we're mostly rural, I don't know.
Both of my dogs didn't come with a requirement that I have a fence (some breeders require this too)...but I do. I know it's not an option for everyone, but I wouldn't want to live without one.
I know our local pit bull rescue inspects each potential adopter's house. I think that's great. I don't know their position on fences (I've heard that they won't give a dog to a home without one, but that was from another rescue that seemed to have a vendetta). I actually wish more rescues/humane societies/what-have-yous would inspect houses, ESPECIALLY with breeds like the pit bull.
