No one has taken a look at what others said about online schools, and hands on was not mentioned in any other comments before I posted concerning online training. I am training a Belgian shepherd (Malinois) And have said that I have trained other dogs. The point is that one needs hands on yes and expert advice. I love the dvd's that help but do they give hands on?
DVD's don't give you hands-on experience, but they are made for an individual training their own dog, not to teach someone to become a professional dog trainer. After you watch the DVD the idea is for you to practice what you learned on your own dog.
You could take the info you learned from an on-line dog training course and then practice on your own dog, and maybe even your neighbor's dog, but that still doesn't make you a professional dog trainer...

I just skimmed through Michael, but I saw quite a few "Hands on" comments. I've seen pro's fill their resume with online courses and member of this or that association. I havent seen anyone claim they became a trainer from watching Leerburg videos.
I have learned a lot form watching videos, BUT just because I KNOW it, doesn't mean I am great at applying it yet I would never call myself a trainer because I watched (hours and hours of) videos on my computer. It's a process. The actual work involved and the success is what makes you a trainer, not the fact that you have read, or watched something. I can watch a video on "how to build a playset" but that doesn't make me a carpenter. If I can build 10 nice playsets to show potential clients, then I am a budding carpenter. Same with dog training. Certificate or not, nothing makes your carreer until you have the hands on experience.

I would like to adress the comments on online training schools. You may have your opinion on them but for some the door is only open for them to- as you put it- waste money. It's one thing to say it a waste but what's the differance between buying videos and learning from them, and getting in an online course: is one any better then the other? If in fact in you tried to help any other person train their dog, and only wished you had the technical terms and knowledge to back up what you're doing. Please one persons desire may take them farther then you would ever go to learn the same stuff. I am in an online dog training course and always looking for more info. Thank you for at least letting people make a go for their dreams, not discouraging them.Don't put us down for our opinion.

Is this what you meant? "If in fact in you tried to help any other person train their dog, and only wished you had the technical terms and knowledge to back up what you're doing. " If so, I too did not understand that what you were saying was that you have trained other dogs.

Really?
The thread is 3 1/2 years old, renewed briefly 2 1/2 years ago, and in both incarnations, "hands on" was the recurring theme.
These are all from page one alone!
QUOTE: Even working at PetSmart for a couple weeks as a trainer will get you more experience and hands on knowledge, and thats saying alot
QUOTE: there is nothing out there that speaks louder than hands on experience.
QUOTE: No piece of paper can top hands on..
QUOTE: Briefly, may I suggest that you get into a local shelter and work your way from volunteer walking to handling difficult cases (if you are experienced enough) and also training your own dog(s) to perfection.
QUOTE: Volunteer at the local shelter to help put manners on the dogs awaiting adoption. I know someone who started out that way and now has a successful pet obedience training business - and many of her clients are referred to her by the shelter she volunteers for.

.... I think if you can put this all to the side, you'll see that no one here really cares that you are taking online training classes. Share and receive info just like the rest of us here and you'll fit in just fine.
Enjoy your classes. Enjoy your life. **** what everyone else thinks.
Good post!
I would add "more info is more info"! I just wouldn't make decisions on method based solely on text. (I'm sure you won't.) And I do think the Michael Ellis marker DVDs will be a huge addition to the course.... even 1 and 2 will present a whole greatPOV.

Have you put a CGC title on your dog? I know I'm bringing up a recurring theme in the thread, but I really do think that titles on your own dog are hugely beneficial both to your body of knowledge and your public image.
