The hounds ran them to a point about four miles south of the prison where they set a grass fire in an attempt to burn out their tracks.
This really makes me chuckle. If there was ever any question as to their exact location, the smoke must have helped answer that question. It's like screaming "Here I am!". Clearly, not the brightest bulbs on the planet.
I am still feeding once in the evening but I have started mixing one raw egg, a little raw hamburger and 120cc of water and 120cc of pedilyte about an hr. prior to deployment. this seems to work well. My dogs love raw eggs and they usually lap up this mix without hesitation.
Jennifer, I wish I could take credit for inventing the use of hounds for tracking people; however it has been done for hundreds of years, I learned most of what I know from a lot of very talented hound men. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice shared thier vast knowledge and experiences with me and we simply tweaked their system to fit our needs. I also had a tutor by the name of Pete Anderson, he chased bad guys all over Okla for thirty yrs. Back when Pete did it he had no radios and carried an old 38 revolver in his pocket, he has forgot more about this game than I will ever know. Pete is around 85 yrs old now and can barely get around but he still gets a twinkle in his eye when I go see him for advice or ask for help with a manhunt. Oh, Sarah, put yourself in the shoes of these guys, they were in the middle of nowhere traveling in 102 degree heat and they have a pack of hounds screaming towards them. They had run out of options and the fire probably was thier best bet, if it had gotten big enough, it would have bought them some time, also if they had utilized it correctly there is a good possibility they may have gotten completely away. How should they have utilized it you ask? Well, I might share that with a few folks sometime but it wont be right here right now.
