Thanks everyone. Sophie is already very lean, so there is near nothing to lose. I am very serious about keeping my dogs as lean as possible, "working weight."
Here is a picture of her knee today after cleaning it up. You can see the bruising and swelling...

I guess it is better to know about the HD now so you can start managing it, rather than finding out when she becomes symptomatic. Best of luck with her, she looks like a sweet girl. Poor baby. She may have 2 strikes against her but she has 1 FOR her - she has you as an owner.

I know this is of absolutely no help whatsoever, but I tore my ACL three months ago, so I really feel for her!
I haven't had reconstruction yet, and haven't decided whether to or not, but one thing that really helped was physiotherapy - again, absolutely no use to you...
Another thing that's of no use to you is that I used to walk with a cane, which was really useful for scaring away unleashed dogs that we came across while I was walking Darwin.
OK, maybe on the next thread I'll have something useful to say, but I hope she gets well soon! It certainly is incredibly frustrating, but they do say that the operation is very effective.

Arik,
I am not sure if your post was tongue-in-cheek or not, it's near impossible to detect "tone" in typed messages.
Sharing your experiences with your personal cruciate injury does help. We're planning on doing some hydrotherapy with Sophie after her stitches are removed.

Angela,
You're right, knowing now is better than finding out when it has reached the point of being painful. What really chaps my hide is that I wanted to get her hips x-rayed preemptively a few years ago because she was doing Agility and Schutzhund, but the vet said that if she was asymptomatic, it would be a waste of money. UGH! I can't believe I listened to him-- stupid me! I could have been giving her joint supplements for years now instead of just finding out.
Steve,
She's really good at laying the guilt trip on you. How can you not melt when she gives you that face! Then she lays down next to you and leans on you like, "oh thank you, I love you." This girl is my heart.

No no! It's true. I wouldn't joke about such a thing. Only it's weird to hear about ACL injuries in dogs. The physiotherapy exercises helped me to strengthen the muscles around the knee, so that I hope I won't need reconstruction. But I don't imagine that you could get a dog to do those kind of exercises on a regular basis. I didn't do hydrotherapy, but all the electrical stimulation and heat pads did was to reduce the pain so that I could get on with the exercises - it's the exercises that did the good job.

We did hydrotherapy, acupuncture and message therapy after the first stage of rehab. I feel like the first two weeks are the hardest and then both you and your dog kind of fall into a routine.
After the stiches/staples were out I moved Ava to an exercise pen instead of crate so she could stretch.
For the second TPLO we took the bed out of the guest room and gave Ava the whole room. We battled with a little panic the first time she was confined. She was crate trained but just could not understand and had SA bad. She figured it out but the first two weeks were rough on us all.
I hope things go smoothly and uneventful.

We brought Sophie outside with us for some yardwork yesterday (Day 3 post-op)
The incision today (Day 4)
Hanging out on the deck
Her in-house setup. She's so good to me, she lays and naps while I mill around cleaning house.

Awww... poor baby looks so sad! I'm sure that has to be really tender. I feel so bad for her, having to go through this! BUT, It's definately better than suffering with the injury and NO treatment!
