Randy..I really have no clue. It wasn't "professionally" done, but one of my son's friends (who is also friend of the owner) took it upon himself to train Max.
I know it would be best for me to have a professional put him through the ropes, to see what he knows or doesn't know and how obedient he is with an actual trainer.
Thanks for your reply I appreciate it.
The thing that stands out to me, also, regarding this topic, is that no matter how long you've known your dog, you never can predict how he will act in all situations at every moment. Dogs, after all, are animals. I know I have a tendency to "forget" that, and that's when we let our guard down. We tend to take for granted "nothing bad ever happened before" so we aren't as vigilant. Someone said somewhere, I think in regards to this post, that that's the difference between people who really work with their dogs, and the "family pet" owner. The ones who train consistently with their dogs are always on the alert. (something like that.)
This is why I mentioned it. Since the dog had run onto the neighbour's property while chasing a squirrel along the telephone wire, he might very well consider her yard as his territory to guard.
Thanks for your reply Matt.
I think this is the difference between working dog mentality and pet owner mentality. I own dogs that I assume WILL bite people, and I take the precautions to prevent people from getting bitten by my dogs. Pet owners own dogs that they assume won't bite people and wait till the dog does before taking precautions.
Best words of advice ever. In my ignorance I have thought quite the opposite. WOW!
When you have found the right people to help, it's always good to take the help offered and ignore any "tone" that might rub you the wrong way.
And, Heidi, always good to remember that a post can't convey a person's tone of voice. If you go back in a week and read that post again, you may feel that it wasn't so harsh after all...
