Temaril-P has proved to be a Godsend for my dog. It stopped the itching and biting and allowed his hair to grow back in.
I'm not thrilled with having to use a steroid but this medication has just a tiny amount...something like 2 mg....which is enough to stop the itch cycle.
I know how relieved you're feeling and I'm glad to hear Dante is doing better.
Thanks, Sarah. How long was your course of Temaril-P? I'm afraid not to have it in the house anymore. It's helped THAT much.
Connie - No confirmed diagnosis unfortunately. We're moving forward based on the physical presentation/symptoms of mange and that scrapes can come up negative (as was in our case).
I was reluctant to do this but he's looking much better now. He has entropic eyelids (one more pronounced than the other) that need attention very soon so we had to kick this thing in the butt and stop fiddlefartin around.
Vet #1? I've sat here for a solid 5 minutes thinking about him and how to respond to that. I'm not going to waste this site's bandwidth by launching into an expletive-filled tirade. I've done that enough privately. To me he'll always be the one who nearly killed my pet.

And it looks like you did the right thing! It sounded like mange way back on page 1. It's really fortunate that you knew to move on from Vet #1, who might do well to receive a letter saying why you won't be back. (I vote with my wallet, and make clear why, too. I mean if you are up to that, and you may not be, and that would be understandable.)
P.S. I don't recall whether this guy is on probiotics, but here's a case where all the immune support you can give will be well-placed.

It's about one month, start to finish, but you're tapering down the dosage and frequency every five days. Right now True is down to 2 tabs once-a-day and he's still itch-free.
My derm vet lets me keep it on-hand for those really bad days and said I can give 1-2 tabs a day, once or twice a week. If I feel he needs more than that then I have to follow a specific protocol set down by the doctor.
The tiny dose of steriod really does help but long-term, constant use of pred is not a good thing, unfortunately.

You are so right. It's one of those things that are overused (a lot) because of its magic bullet qualities, and it has a host of short- and long-term side effects (some very serious indeed). I too have used Pred, though, in the smallest and most temporary effective dose, to break a cycle that was negatively affecting quality of life.
