If you crate the dog in the car he can't get out in an accident.
If you lock your gate, people can't leave it open.
If you don't leave your dog alone in the yard while you're not home, then the fence could magically disappear and it wouldn't matter, other than being annoying.
I still don't get it....
I see that your life is ordered and highly structured and you never have anything unplanned happen to you, around you, or to anyone you know. I had no idea this "Belgium" was such a place.

Things can happen regardless of how well you are prepared, sometimes we say that would never happen to me or my dogs, but, then you are quite surprised that it can and it does. Two examples: About 4 years ago, a training/boarding facility near me was hit by a tornado, there was 1 dog in a crate when it hit, the entire building was demolished, they found the crate with the door ripped opened a few yards from the building site, the dog was found by a family a few days later wondering the street, they had no idea who the dog belonged to, it took quite awhile, before the owner was found , if the dog had been chipped, he may have been reunited sooner with his owners, (and if this had been a large city, the owner may not ever had been located). Another incident, a family had a house fire, the dog was in a crate, the family had time to get their children out and only time to open the crate, the dog ran out, with the sirens going, everyone crowding around, the smells, noise etc, the dog ran to hid, it was 3 weeks before the dog was located. So no matter how careful you are things can happen.

I do not live my life spending $600 in case I get into a car wreck on GPS collars in case the crate breaks.
What if a sharp edge of the crate rips the band around the GPS collar and the dog runs off without it. What if aliens abduct your dog, wouldnt that be out of range?
You can go on forever with what if's. I could get hit by a car crossing the street tomorrow because I didn't invest in a bubble. The GPS collar would be a moot point.

I don't want to be a wet blanket or anything, but I think only a nincompoop would tie their dog outside of a store and leave them unattended for any lenght of time. Period.

Oh, boy, laughing out loud at work!!
Seriously, I can see where people who have SAR and/or hunting dogs might find something like this very useful. But Mike is right, for the regular pet owner, it's a lot of money for something that might never be of use.
Someone needs to invent a microchip with GPS...OnStar for dogs!

What if green gorrillas parachute out of the sky, and assault in force?
Oh....
Sorry... I get kinda carried away. I like the "what if" game. It helps me wake up. I almost like it better than hide & go seek.
Seriously though- there are rational fears, and irrational fears.
There is a fine line between hoping for the best and planning for the worst- vs- letting fear color every decision that you make.

Just to make it clear, I wouldn't spend the money on it either, however I do think the microchip is good to have, but that doesn't mean that I spend my life worrying about the what ifs, because I don't, however I just know that things can happen.....In actualality, I think the GPS collar is just a money making idea that someone came up with, and of course people will buy them....

I have no qualm with chips at all and I believe they are more than plenty sufficient as a precaution. All my dogs are chipped and have passports, its the law.

I'll think about chips alot most seriously when I take a dog into a new vet or vica versa I take a new dog to my vet and they, as a routine, scan the dog.
I'll think about chips alot more seriously when we get one standard numbering system.
At the moment it just seems to be a big hodge podge hit or miss.
Dear Abby,
Have you seen my dog?
Looking for big brother,
Randy
