Thanks also for your experience with Dante (who, by the way, is a great looking puppy from the pic in your sig line). It's comforting to hear that you have a similar experience. I'm going to get her a prong collar, I just haven't decided on when.
I can just picture you getting yanked off your feet; Cleo did the same thing to my wife. Because I weigh in at about 225, I don't have that exact problem. Rather I worry that when Cleo (now about 55 lbs.) bolts and I hold the lead, she'll get hurt from the sudden stop. I have to let the lead out a bit and run with her for a soft landing.
Thought I'd update all the thoughtful folks who replied:
BREAKTHROUGH TODAY! On our morning 1/2 block walk, Cleo walked right next to me as we practice everyday in the house. I couldn't believe it. All of the sudden, presto!, she was a little angel.
Also, she seems to be a lot less rascal-ily (my own word?). Less counter-surfing and nipping. She's minding better, as well. She's now 1 week shy of 5 months and losing her canines. I wonder if she was in a lot of discomfort with the teething thing.
Thanks to all of you who gave suggestions. You really helped and my wife, Cleo and I are grateful.

ALL RIGHT!!!!
So you practiced indoors first! Isn't that great, how the lack of distraction (and "I am outside! Woo-hoo" excitement) can leave room for focus?
