I enjoyed the show a lot. I like how they interspersed comments from the head trainer and other bosses with comments about their regard for the K9s and handlers. I think it's also a good thing that they're obviously working to dispell myths (we train dogs to hold suspects, not to tear them apart).
It was great to see a female handler with so much dog!
There is another thing this show got me thinking about.
It seems to me that having to narrate what's happening at every step of the process, from when the call comes in thru the pursuit and resolution, is terribly distracting for the officers. I don't know how they do it<g>.
I know when I'm driving, if I don't pay attention to what I'm doing and where I'm going, and if I'm having a conversation with someone else in the vehicle, I'm likely to miss turns and such, just from the lack of focus.
I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be in such high adrenaline situations, with your dog whining in eagerness to be working, speeding in pursuit, having to watch for citizens and bystanders and other vehicles, pay attention to all that and the computers they seem to glance at continually, and then have to provide ongoing, cogent narration to the camera crew...it almost seems like we're asking to much of our officers to do so.
Yet, each officer shown last night stayed calm and in control thru all of this. Very impressive!
Is anyone worried about "them" using the show as a way to use against K9 programs? I know that there is a public movement to eliminate all K9 usage. I just hope it doesn't go that way. sorry to poopoo on all the happiness..
WHEN I SEE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, I'D BE WILLING TO DIE PROTECTING IT.

Chris…. I can only speak for the Pittsburgh area when I say this but almost everyone loves K9 Units. They are second only to DARE officers in exposure to the public. People love coming to K9 demos an meeting the dogs. The show painted a really nice and honest picture of Police K9 work in America.

I would hope this wouldn't be the case . If we thought it was going hinder the use of K9's we wouldn't have done it . We have a lot of support from our community and got a great response almost immediately after the show aired .
I'm not a great multi tasker doing all that while in a squad , looking for badguys , listening up for updates on the radio and driving a car was a pain in the butt . I work the only overlap shift in the unit and we don't have the camera guys as much so we don't deal with it as often . When I did have them with I was exhausted after the shift .
From what I heard from the Animal Planet guys the next 3-4 weeks episodes are supposed to get even better .
I know one episode will give the public a good idea of what it's like for Police Officers ( not just K9 Officers ) when a very dangerous situation is unfolding around them in a crowded neighborhood and they must make split second descisions and see the price we sometimes pay in doing that .
We had a small premiere party and after watching I'm now collecting some of the cheesey lines we are caught saying on camera . After all 15 episodes I'm going to make a K9 Cops t-shirt with all of them on it . I got a feeling there's not going to be much room left when we are done . Feel free to help me out and send me any lines you find entertaining .
