No no no Jenni,
I'm not looking for an argument! I just reread my last post, I didn't mean it like it could be taken.
I only asked for my own weird mental file.
I do consider him a bit more than the average family pet, in that I would never allow people to walk into my house w/out warning, as many "family" homes do allow. I lived alone w/him mostly, but recently I acquired live-in kennel help due to a job change. Caleb has had absolutely ZERO problems adjusting to Devin. Does he listen to him as instantaneously as he does me? Well, no, but he is basically obedient and causes Dev no problems. To be perfectly honest, some of his acceptance may be attributed to the fact that Dev and I are not romantically involved...and that is evident. Also, we are rarely home at the same time. A PPD is different than an attack dog; if I'm not home, he really has no job to do and is free to be a dog, which he does gleefully (or as gleeful as Mr.Grouchy ever is, LOL).
OTOH, the dog is stable enough to be taken to Grandma's at a large family gathering, and the only hints to his training are the fact that he will not accept food without coming up to me, then walking back to the person offering the food and "asking" if it's ok if he eats it. He will accept food now from my mom, sis, and grandma w/out permission, but no one else. He is indifferent and aloof-not outwardly aggressive w/out provocation.
I have absolutely no qualms about having him around my children, if I ever have any. He accepts what he is expected to accept, and so far, has done it gracefully. I keep a close eye on him at all times and just make sure we see situations the same way, and so far, so good. He is clear-headed to the core and has never gone "overboard" even in the instances I screwed up and wasn't watching him close enough. He gives a clear warning and has never bitten w/out direction.
I doubt I answered your question, Randy, but I really don't consider him a "PPD" exclusively for those reasons. I agree w/everything you said above when relating to a pure PPD, and would have no problem adjusting a lifestyle to suit that kind of dog, but I have been fortunate w/him to have what I consider the best of both worlds. Sometimes I think I love that dog way too much.
I feel really bad now. I hope the OP got SOME useful info from this.
