Please don't ask that "friend" anything else regarding your dog! What a jerk! Redirect that puppy...would you hit your toddler with a rolled up paper? NO!!!! Never!!! Give that puppy something appropriate to mouth. Toss a ball or a toy and praise him when he focuses on that instead of your hand. Trade out your hand for something really special that he should have in his mouth. Do it now or you will miss your window of opportunity. Who will suffer in the end? The dog! So train him right now and avoid more problems later on.
I have a 10 week old GSD that I didn't take from her mother and four other siblings until she was 8 1/2 weeks. Yet, she bites. She nips. And I say "no bite" and try to re-direct. I say "ouch" really loud and I don't think that is having any effect on her anymore. So I am back to "no bite" and re-directing. It is definitely something puppies go through, some worse than others. I wonder what she will be like in two months when her teeth are bigger.
Suggestion on toys -- in addition to the good ones from others about Kong -- does your dog like squeaky toys? My GSD loves this one thick rubber dinosaur that squeaks. If you are in close quarters with her, it can drive you nuts after a little while, but as long as I am not sitting at my desk with her right next to me, she is completely entertained by it. Try one and see if it grabs her attention for a while.
