i'm cuting out over matti. neb has opened me up to smaller dogs still being kick-ass little boobers.
i have to agree with alyssa here; there are lots of pet-quality dogs that occur in working litters. given the number of dogs in shelters and rescues, i just don't see the point of breeding FOR pets or deviating from breed standard/goals. dogs in shelters/rescues can fulfill a lot of the pet need, and people who don't want to go that route can always get pet dogs from breeders who are breeding to standard and keeping breeds like the GSD working dogs. but that is jmo.
Where did Alyssa say that? I missed something. Yes, that's true. I even brought up that GOOD show breeders don't breed to sell for pets. They know not every dog will be up to snuff, so they place those that are not, but never breed w/the intent that they will sell them as pets. Breeding to produce pets will always allow more faults than breeding for a purpose.
Matti IS cute. Thank you. I wanted a GF for Widge; since I changed jobs, he's been a bit depressed. She has put that spring back in his step, if you know what I mean! Ok, I think I just made myself nauseous w/all that humanizing. Truth be told, he IS much perkier w/another pal to lounge w/during the day. I was starting to worry he was getting old (he's 9), but nope; he was just lonely and bored b/c my work schedule now SUCKS. He was used to going to work w/me.
But you don't BREED with that as a goal. If a percentage of dogs in the best working litter will end up as pets, what percentage of dogs in a pet litter will end up suitable as... well... nothing?
I can see in certain breeds that show breeders would like the standard that working breeders (hopefully) are in breeds like the GSD, for the reason you're saying, they're breeding with a goal with respect to showing, not to sell pets. Though I am FAR from a breeding expert, it's just what I think from seeing/dealing with rescues; I don't think breeding is bad at all, I just wish it was done better; there are lots of responsible breeders looking to better their breeds out there but they are sadly outnumbered
Ufortunately, we are always going to have irresponsible people and therefore irresponsible breeders. The biggest problem is the fact that the worst contributors are the types of people you will never change with reason, logic, compassion, or law. It's akin to BSL...ok, sure. Regulate all you want. Only the responsibe people will listen and conform, and they're not the ones whose dogs are causing the problems. <sigh>
Opening an old thread. Rin Tin Tin came up in conversation at dinner with friends last night. I was doing a search on the history to make sure what I had said was correct (it was). During my search I see that Rin Tin Tin will be visiting my city this September. I intend to attend the event. Childhood memories.
