Will, AWESOME INFORMATION!!!!!!
Will, I have a question about liability and the PPD training and dogs. Like most of us have heard, a 'bad guy' breaks into a home, owner shoots the 'bad guy', 'bad guy' dies. But what we find out later is that he was a saint (sarcasm) and the family wants to sue over the loss of their saint. The home owner, the gun manufacture and the bullet manufacture all get thrown into this lawsuit. But now instead of a gun manufacture, throw in the breeder and trainer.
What protections if any are in place for the PPD training center (legit centers) and breeders? Also, what protection do you have in place if something like this ever comes to a head.
This since everyone today is sue happy I have always wondered this. And in the same sense, what liabilities are in place for just the basic obedience trainers today. A dog goes through class and passes but the owner does not keep up with training and the dog bites them, is the dog trainer from a year ago still on the liability hook?

Self-defense laws (with both a gun and a dog) vary from state to state.

Civil laws are pretty no-holds barred.
I don't know if there is a case precedent, but I'm sure that in theory, anyone who trained the dog could find themself liable.
Depends on a lot of factors- mainly, did the breeder or trainer know that the dog had "issues"?

I think I would rather show my dog was trained to know what to bite and is under control only reacting to a threat. If your untrained barking dog bites someone the lawsuit and judgement is still big.

Rick, you need to really have a plan in place *before* hand regarding your views about notifying 911 after a confrontation that used lethal force.
The statement "I was in fear for my life and my attacker gave me no choice but to defend myself" is the *only* statement that you should make in the event of a bad event until you have full legal representation.
Don't say *anything*, and I mean *anything* until you have legal council.
If you're more of the "do it yourselfer" type, this might be worth a read:

Just for information purposes, of course.

You need to make a decision - do you really need or want a true PPD, and if so, are you willing to make the *many* changes to your life style to be able to successfully manage the canine?
Am I the only one that does not understand what that means? Will or someone else, could you clarify?
Not that I want a PPD but just so I can go to bed a tad smarter tonight ...

When I mention civil, I am referring lawsuits because someone is dead or seriously maimed and in that case anyone and everything can get dragged into it. This is nothing new, Cessna Aircraft, GM, Smith and Wesson and the list can go on and on, all having been drug into civil court one point or another. Where warranted or not, we all have a liability and we will be judged by a jury if deemed necessary. I am just trying to find out some of the protections a PPD dog trainer or owner has and what kind of protections the basic weekend dog trainer has in place.
I am not trying to debate our legal system.

That was funny!!
the CCW course I took also mentioned that as well, they also mentioned the $10,000 question. Is it worth $10,000... because once you talk the gun out you are going to need $10,000 to secure the lawyer.
Of course when lives are at risk..... it is not even a thought. But still something we all need to be aware of.
