I'm sure you will Pat, just stick around here and you'll learn a ton.
I can't remember exactly on the CGC (it was so many treats ago), but I have read of other dogs passing as early as 5-6 mos. It's just good, consistent training.
Thanks Barbara!!
There is so much information to take in here and all great stuff. Marker training is the same as clicker training isn't it?
I haven't got to that article yet,but I WILL.!!
Everyone has been so helpful and I greatly appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to answer my questions and for sharing your experise with me.
That's good to hear for there is no way I could hit my dogs with anything.
There are no clubs here in Alabama.I'll have to check and see if there are any in Mississippi or see if there are enough ppl around here that might be interersted in starting one.
Right now, I kind of doubt that there is. Two days ago in Fayette Co a woman and her three children were attacked by 4 Pittbulls. She was really mauled badly, they had bitten through both of her calf mucsles, one to the bone, tore the bicep muscle in one of her arms, had really bad bites on both buttocks and on her back. The owner of the dogs finally got them off of her with the help of the cops. The cops found out that he had a meth lab in his house and three other Pitt mix dogs.
Its not the Pittbulls'fault they were trained to gaurd that meth lab.So anything dealing with anything relating to any dog activity right now is not looked upon with much favor. My guess is that dog owners can't even walk their dogs in the park anymore even if they are leashed after this.Personally I think they ought to put the owner down and rehabilitate the dogs.
Luckily the lady will live.
I think our breed will have a hard time in the public view for a long time. And biting sport is a difficult notion to comprehend for the vast majority. Attacks like you described are horrible and will knock us all down for a while. I am so glad to hear that she will be OK… Unfortunately we (the biting dog sport world) have had to deal with these types of situations before, and are used to standing our ground and riding the storm. The clubs will keep on keeping on.
From a fellow Rott owner (but this is NOT a breed specific topic), the bite training is more about bringing out the best in your dog than anything else. It helps a dog and owner create a bond that is difficult to comprehend unless you work at high levels of another dog sport. In this case, we are teaching our powerful animals how to have extreme control in very stimulating and physical situations. They are also forced to use their brains in a way that 99% of pet dogs will never be asked to do. It is fulfilling for them, as all working dogs were bred to work!
Obedience, confidence and fun come first above all else. How could you ever beat that?
My dogs love this sport. I love this sport, and am proud of the accomplishments my dogs have achieved. I don’t let those who have no knowledge pass judgment on or discount what we are.
Jessica was he in a competition when he was rolling? I LOVE IT !!
That's a confident dog there. He's just making good use of his "down time".
THANK YOU so much for the information on the clubs. I'll check them out.
Ugo I have hope for. He'll play fetch as long as I can hold out to throw his toy.Yesterday he went and got it four times and dropped in my lap.Whatever I'm doing I'll stop and go throw it for him b/c I want to keep him motivated.
Angus, all he wants is a stick. He has got to where he collects them. I'll throw one which he grabs and runs to the front steps with it and brings a different one for me to throw. I don't know what that's about.Maybe he is learning to be an expert on sticks and trying to find the "right" one.He keeps his sticks all in one place and not every stick merits a special place on the porch,so far he has five out of I don't know how many he has discarded that I've thrown back into the woods. He doesn't go bring those back. Its an Angus thing and he doesn't bother sharing his reasoning with me.
