I plan to raise meat birds this summer. I want to have enough for the herd I have....and some for us to eat as well. We now have 6 hens and I am getting some 'retired" organic layers. Organic Valley requires that the egg producing farmers switch out their birds every year....so the retirees have to go somewhere. I think I may get 5 or 6 more...I would like to get about a dozen eggs a day to give to family and friends. I thought about meat rabbits, but not sure the kids would let me butcher their adopted little fuzzy critters....so meat birds it is for me!
Cindy- just post an ad on Craigslist for the excess cockerels. Someone will take them off your hands. Just don't ask where they are headed.
We named our cow Steak-ums last year. He is pretty tasty. All my meat chickens were named drumstick.
Of all the things I have "taken care of" in that way, the rabbits and ducks were the two I had the hardest time with. The second batch of ducks ended up being given to a family because I couldn't do it again...
Hey Deanna, I don't think I can put an ad on craigslist...because I WILL have to ask what is going to happen to them.
I think I want to dispatch extras as dog food and for us to eat, but don't think I want to do it myself. I've been googling to find a place to take poultry for processing with no luck. any tips on how to find someone? I've been searching on BYC too.
How about checking with a local feed store/farm equipment place to ask if they know of other clients who raise and slaughter chickens. You might be able to work something out with another local "back yard farmer".
In my younger days we ate our farm raised animals.....ain't no way I can do it now. I can't even trick myself into thinking I can justify it. It's great for those who can, I just can't. Most I can do is have some chickens for the eggs.
We always grow a garden but, the meat has to come from the store.
Yeah, ask at the feed store. They will know. Most places that do it aren't on the beaten path or the internet. BYC is another good place to ask in the meat bird section.
