Y'all are so much nicer than I am.
I almost feel a little evil when I consider my thoughts, and read y'alls.

I get it, Debbie. I think what the situation has been is that it was cheaper to pay a ransom as a part of doing business than it was to arm the ships. Of course, that is no longer viable. Plus, I don't think they had captured a boat under the American flag.
I think I also saw where the Italians had commented that America had gone to this extreme for ONE citizen and they (the Italians) had a ship with 14 or so captured and indicated that we (USA) should do something.
I don't want to start anything here, but it looks like, once again, Europe wants us to protect them, but offer us no support.

I agree.
It was all a bit much, over ONE person.
I am happy that the SEALs were able to get some marksmanship practice in, though. I guess that makes it worth the astronomical waste of money, time and resources.

Alyssa, I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this.
I placed emphasis on the "ONE" because this is the way I read what the Italians said. I think we have to take care of our citizens whether one or many.

My apologies if the way I quoted you made it look as though the quoted text actually represented your opinion.
I knew that you were merely pointing out what the Italians had said, and didn't agree with it.
It would have been far cheaper for the governement to pay the ransom, and then sink the pirates as they sped away with the money.

Kristel I am so glad to hear your friend is back safe and sound. I can't imagine the worry and stress you and your family must have felt during this entire hostage crisis.

My bad, lol. My 'hackles' are now back down and I still aspire to be you.
Methinks, tho, that this is the beginning, not the end. Especially since the pirates have claimed to attack all American ships.

I'm so glad he's safe too. I'm just a friend of the family and the anxiety was almost unbearable. I didn't want to think about the effect on Richard's family had the outcome been less successful. Fortunately we don't have to find out and I feel almost giddy for them.
I think, and this is strictly my entirely biased opinion, that considering the threat and frequency of the piracy problems, these ships should be well-armed. I realize it's a big expense, but it all sounds very "lord of the flies" in Somalia, and it seems like it might be time to put them out of business. If their income from theft and piracy dried up, maybe they'd find something more productive to do with their time.
Now that I have the luxury of being angry, I'm all for a no-tolerance policy where pirates are concerned. Greedy, uneducated, immoral s.o.b's....

using armed security aboard merchant ships would cause insurance issues and each country has very different opinions on how well civilians are armed. IMO "Q" ships would be the cheapest and most effective with an aggressive policy of destroying safe havens for pirates
