GSDSAR, that's how I train my Lab, it's my older mix that I don't see any reason to change things with this late in life. The problem I amhaving now, though, is that the Lab does tend to forge ahead on the heel when I praise him. Guess we need to keep working on that one!
A soft leash correction is certainly not what I would call out of line here. No one is saying go right for the prong and bombs away. I Stay until released and I get rewarded. Leave before being released and I get corrected. Pretty black and white. I don't believe we need to over-complicate things all the time.
update, the puppy picked up on the stay command after only 2 or 3 sessions, thanks again,
what do you think about this exerpt from Dr Ps site, is the technique good for anything :
"Put a leash on your dog and give the command "DOOWWNNNN" once. If the dog doesn't do it or hasn't learned the command put him down on his belly; if he rolls on his back that is fine as long as he is down for the duration of this dominance exercise. A pup or untrained dog will get up (repeatedly) pretty quick, but keep putting him down without babbling to him. You can growl "NO!" and the command to him one more time but you should otherwise be silent. Eventually, the dog will settle for at least enough time to set your timer for 30 minutes. Yes, this must be done "Cold Turkey" for thirty minutes! "
I don't think Dr.P was saying that you will get a 30 minute stay after a few sessions. The goal would be a achieve a 30 minute stay.
I worked the stay with my GSD by keeping a very light tension on the choke chain. Started this at 6 months.(old school training) Always ended session on a positive reaction to command, ALWAYS!! Correction giving when stay broken,(usually a little slight pull on leash) reward only given after session completed. We have well passed the 30 minute mark.
AKITA will only hold for 10 t 15 minutes most.
i was taught that praise needs to be low key, avoid praise that over excites the dog. use a low soothen voice and gentle pats on the head. deanna hit the nail right on the head.
