I just got on line and read this. I remember Aera from some of the videos and I am so sorry, Cindy, you lost your girl. I lost one dog without being able to say goodbye or without anyone being there and the feeling of not doing your job and being the owner and partner you should be sucks.
But, our dogs know they are loved, and, for them to go quickly and with minimal or no pain, is all we can ask---even if we can't be there with them. Aera knows she was loved and had permission to go without you, because you would want her to be comfortable. She knew your mind and heart, Cindy. Take comfort in that.
Had a similiar experience with my cairn. My husband took him in because he was dehydrated and left him over night. We were surprised to find he had died during the night. He was an older dog,and had been blind for several years. Sorry you were not able to be there with her.
I am SO SORRY for your loss. It sounds like she went quickly - which is good only in the fact that she wasn't suffering.
To have her go in for a "routine" procedure and then have some unforeseen complication take her away is a terrible thing to have to deal with. Like you, I would not know how to handle this immediately. I can empathize with you.
On a more positive note, I'm sure she had an incredibly happy and fulfilling life with you - you wouldn't have had it any other way. She was well cared for, loved, and was able to do things she enjoyed. Her life was better than most dogs lives. The folks here on the forum all have special dogs that are cared for better than the average Joe. For that WE can be thankful in being able to really provide for our furry friends a life that is exceptional to say the least.
Cindy and Mike, I'm sorry to hear of the losses of Aera and Yasko. I lost my last GSD to bloat. The suddenness and that feeling of not being for them in a time of need is not easy to accept, but it doesn't diminish from the joy and fulfillment our companions bring to us while they are with us. Their memories will continue to evoke happy thoughts and be a source of positive feelings.
