My vet tried using scare tactics throwing out deficiencies constantly at me. After about 3 visits of him trying to change my mind and put my dog back on kibble, he gave in. I am still switching vets because of the looks he gives me. Take everyone's advice and just switch vets as well. Find your local Schutzhund club because chances are some/most of them feed raw and they should be able to point you in the direction of a vet that would approve the diet and not intimidate you.

So...
I popped back to the vets today - there was a different vet there, I asked her about what the other vet had said about raw diet causing amino acid deficiency. She laughed and said that was rubbish. She also said that she doesn't recommend it but just to make sure I was feeding enough bone so the pup had calcium etc. to grow properly.
That's better but I'm still going to use my 'real' vet.
The Derm vet did a Chem 25 and CBC on True. The cost was $116. The Chem 25 alone is roughly $80. Keep in mind these are California prices.
It's a comprehensive blood panel showing the levels of calcium and phosphorus, glucose, BUN and creatinine...among other things. It gives a pretty complete snapshot of the dog's health: liver and kidney function, blood glucose, etc. This panel was mostly to check True's liver and kidney function. He's taking Atopica, which can be harmful to those organs.
Personally, I think it's wise to run a blood panel on any age dog about 6 months after you switch to raw. I would run a yearly blood panel on any dog, kibble or raw-fed, 3 years and older. Gives me a lot of peace of mind and gives us a head's up if something is going wrong.
All JMHO.
Sarah, thanks so much for this post. I don't know how I missed it, but I just now saw it.
Now that I know the lingo, I will call and price these tests.
My dog will be 2 in August, so I will probably put off doing these tests until a little later as it is flea, tick and heartworm season here and all that gets so expensive.
She seems healthy, shiny coat, clean teeth, clean ears, plenty of energy (too much energy, I wish I had that) and every time she has been to the vet, he said she looks good and this was even after the last flea allergy problem a couple of months ago.
Even then, her coat is shiny.
He gave her a steroid shot and put her on clavamox for 3 weeks and that helps. He did a skin scraping and there was a skin infection but no mange or other paraistes.
Of course, this is all for another thread. I just lament for more confidence for me, I guess.
