If you feel your rights have been violated contact the department to complain or maybe get clarification on their actions . If you complain and aren't satisfied contact a lawyer to see what can be done . They in turn know of other avenues to take in dealing with the "offending" department .
I encourage people who think I violated their rights to contact a lawyer . I'm comfortable that my actions were legal and most find out or realize after seeking consultation that I was acting properly .
In my 17 year career I've only had a handful of complaints and all have been resolved in my favor . I think my complaints are low because I encourage people to become educated about my actions .

Thanks guys, appreciate the help. for those that have issue with the police, suggest you look closely on how you interface with people, in my experience you generally get the attitude you give

I'm surprised the question wasn't asked ; " What can I do about this agency abusing K9 alerts , randomly searching vehicles and detaining people for hours ? "
My first thought too.
I appreciate Dennis's question because I have never given a thought to what I would do if an officer acted unprofessionally......I have only ever been treated professionally.
I have a feeling there is a lot more to the story than has been written or the perception of the "victims" of said abuse is skewed.....not for anything who does not know how to contact a lawyer and why wouldn't you if your rights were trampled.....

This is only one of the good reasons we have audio and video running most of the time. I can't tell you how many times I've been nothing but professional with someone on a traffic stop while they ranted and raved, being a full blown ass wipe calling me every word in the book and making veiled threats to me and my family. Then, after recieving a citation, arrest or whatever, they have the balls to make a complaint and act all meek and innocent while complaining about the jack booted officer who violated his rights and was disrespectful.
To see their faces (and I always request to be there) while reviewing the video is priceless. It's even better when the Lt. kicks their ass out of the PD or be subject to arrest for filing a false police report (complaints are public record and fall into official reporting guidlines).
On top of that, I make it clear that my lawyer will be notified of this incident and a civil lawsuit would be pending if so much as a breath of the false allegation reaches public consumption. I'm sick of being beat up on by ass wipes. A hint of defamation in the air and numb nuts is going to pay. They want us to play by the rules...well they have to do the same.
Road side attorneys really piss me off too.

Sheila stated ;
" I have a feeling there is a lot more to the story than has been written or the perception of the "victims" of said abuse is skewed..... "
That's my feeling also , but... there are badcops out there so it's entirely possible .
I think most traffic stops are very uncomfortable . Who wants to be pulled over and told they did something wrong . I know I don't enjoy it and feel damn anxious when I've been pulled over . Yes I've gotten tickets also and been questioned about what appeared to the Officer to be suspicious activity . When I explained myself that was it . Had my car searched in college and knowing what I know now he had every right and was doing good cop work . Obviously I had done nothing wrong and was released after he found nothing . But I can see now where he thought the actions of my friends and I were suspicious but at the time I thought he and his backup were jerks .
Sometimes it's just our defences kicking in making the event seem worse . "Why's he/she picking on me I'm not a bad person ? " , " Doesn't he have better things to do ? " , " Is it really that big a deal ? " . "Listen to this guy , like he's never made a mistake before ; does he think he's that much better then me ? "
Again though , with that said I encourage those who after looking at their experiance with Law Enforcement objectively and still feel the Officer's actions were wrong please take action . These bad officers make our job alot tougher .

Good cop work makes people uncomfortable. If we just threw our hands in the air and gave up cause it feels like we're pissing in the wind...these same jerks would slam us for not doing our job and being lazy cops.
A serial killer in North/South Carolina was just killed by the police yesterday. Seems he had a 25 page rap sheet. Cops did their job but the judges and juries didn't. Course we're the ones the public see most so we become the whipping boys.

I can't imagine why you're even still on the job Howard, Jim and any others on the job.
If you do your job or if you don't do your job.
As a police officer, you're vilified by someone.
I wish the country would grow up..........And finally get over the 50's and 60's.
The days are past that the police departments are a personal militia of some backroom power broker or family connected mayor come governor.
99.9999999% of the time police no longer hassle people 'just because'.
If you're having issues now, it's very likely for good reason.

I agree.
And here's a site where were are loaded with great and helpful and dedicated LEOs, but still have the broad-brush statements made. How is it where LE is NOT a significant presence? I would imagine that it's frustrating and outrageously unjust.
I personally am embarrassed for the board every time we have another no-real-story news item posted about LE here. (No, Dennis, I do NOT mean you, who had an actual question. )
And yes, thus speaketh what many here would call a tree-hugging pinko nut! One who appreciates and respects the tough job that LEOs do for us every single day that they get out of bed.

That's why I would not be a good LEO, I'd be too tempted to save the courts and prisons a lot of money and time
