Mr. Epstein, I understand the point that the odds of finding a competent/excellent working dog from the show lines of many breeds are often low. I myself have a working line dog within my breed of choice. I also understand that working titles don't always actually reflect the working ability of the dog. I referenced Brittanys because they are a breed which does not have this problem. No, I'm not "actually involved" in Brittanys but I do have a friend who is and we discussed the working abilities of showline Brittanys vs. working line Brittanys, amongst a few other sporting breeds.
My point was not that show lines are "equally competent" at work as working lines. Rather, I was responding to the comment that generalized to all breeds and was contending that I didn't believe that was necessarily so.
While the GSD and some other breeds have suffered due to breeding to the AKC conformation standards, I don't think this statement can or should be generalized to all breeds.
As for the GSD don't blame AKC, do blame SV!!!
Being a Mal owner it makes me sick to see breeders working on small dogs for agility. It's not the club or association it's usually the people to blame. And the majority wins/rules; I just hope there will never be an agility type Malinois majority ARGH.
