The vet explained that he was no longer able to do anything that he enjoyed anymore and that was no way for him to live.
I admire that straight-talking vet. I tend to listen to the vet say what she feels she has to say about treatment options, hospice, etc., and then I say "What would YOU do if this was YOUR dog." I have received some illuminating advice that way.
Although being the one to have to make the decision to end his life has stayed with me even after all this time, i knew it was the right one.
If your guy is in pain, you owe it to him to help take away his pain.
He'll love you for it, trust me.

Thank you for sharing this Wendy. It’s definitely something I needed to hear.
We had a wonderful day today. Took the boys for a 3 hour hike while Edward spent some quiet time in the yard. When we got home I gave Edward his Deramaxx and a morphine tablet and we headed out to his favorite beach with the husky. The sun was shining and he was smiling. We walked aimlessly for about 10 minutes and then he’d had enough. We sat down and shared some pepperoni for next ½ hour while he caught his breath and headed home. He’s fast asleep snoring beside me.
If it weren’t for the drugs I don’t think he’d of even made it into the vehicle. As much as I know he enjoyed the time out and together with us, he was also telling me a lot more. And perhaps I was just more open to it or even looking for it, but his eyes caught mine many times. Deep, hard stares. I don’t know how he could have said it any clearer. He’s in pain and it’s time to let him go.

Thinking of you today. As hard as it is, try to approach the actual euthanasia with as much positive energy as you can--the dog will pick up on your stress, so try to make it as low key as possible.
Remember, this is not something you're taking away...it is a very great gift that you are giving to your friend. Most dogs in the world do not die with dignity and in relative comfort, with a beloved companion next to them. A pain-free death is the greatest gift we can give our dogs.
