No no. What I said was "5 seconds." I really meant that. The idea is to go out and return BEFORE the anxiety sets in. Only gradually is the time increased, and also randomized. (10 seconds, 2 seconds, 20 seconds, 2 seconds ....)

No, she doesn't think they have come to take her away.
How is she biting or even going for the cat guy's leg if she is on lead when people come over? (See CJ's post.)
I would probably have her away from the visitors, with me, on lead, until they settled in and were talking quietly, and then come in with her, paying little attention to them, sitting where they are not able to loom, interact, etc.

Again, Michelle, the intent of this type of work is to reward the calm behaviour. What you are doing "hear her cry... party is on", is rewarding the opposite.
If you continue this, it will only get worse. Depending on the severity, you leave (2 sec, 10 sec, 2 sec, 5 sec) as Connie has mentioned. You MUST return BEFORE she starts reacting to your absense. Do not allow her to whine or become panicked. Again, you're just increasing and rewarding the increased anxiety.
This is not only setting you back, you are running full speed backwards, potentially creating a much deeper rooted anxiety that is going to be difficult to correct.
Seconds... no mail, no chickens. All focus in on training the dog during this process.

Michelle, I wasn't clear enough that the tiny time spans are designed so that you can return before she reacts. Any time she reacts and THEN you return and reward, you have taught that the increased reaction is the best way to get you back.
You want to teach that leavetakings are no big deal at all. It's going to take a while, but having been through it many times in my life, I can tell you that it's worth it.
Ed posted in her other recent thread that she will not be returning, as he has banned her.
