I think the reason about the dogs not being allowed on the cross country trails is because it is a provincial park and dogs must be leashed. We get a lot of skijorers on the dog trail and there are no probelms as the dogs are "leashed", under control and behaving themselves. A well trained sled dog will "on by" distractions but a little snack sized unleashed dog machine gunning a challenge is just too much for some dogs. Leash rules in the park are also for the protection of wildlife - some people seem to think that their dogs being small are immune to being dogs. Considering the fairly healthy population of wolves in the area it is also possible that some of the wildlife might chase them back!

..and then there's Skijoring. Anybody tried this?
Deanna, we've got the same leash laws in our National Forests. Do people follow the rules? I'll give you one guess.

I didn't mean to imply that the rules were followed here, quite the opposite I am afraid. Same old thing comes out of their mouths "oh, he is friendly"

No manners, but "friendly".
As they were leaving they asked if their friendly dog could play with my dog. They seemed surprised when I said NO. After all their dog is so friendly And they have NO CONTROL over it.
Watching the dog bounce around (60 poundish dog), it was amazing that it didn't injure someone. But it's friendly!
Well, at least this one was people friendly. I never saw it with another dog, so have no idea about it's dog skills.
There's friendly and there's friendly. A friendly dog can still injure someone, and a lot of dog owners just don't understand dogs.

You know what really confuses the hell out of me? When your walking your dog and another dog walker approaches you and their dog starts barking and snarling at your dog, they look at you like you started it! I have even had someone ask me what was wrong with my dog! Ain't that a Hoot?
What's wrong with my dog.. Harrrrrrrrr har har

What's wrong with my dog.. Harrrrrrrrr har har A similar thing happened with me and my female. We had gone to the pet store and were sanding in line, a long line I might add, and some guy had a 6 months old puppy, labx, that was straining at the leash barking and whining and howling at my dog. They kept inching closer to me and Hanah and I asked that they back off a bit, They did with no problem, well the dog never shut up and finally after 5 minutes Hanah,my dog, had had enough and turned towards the dog and mouthed off right back, she had ignored the dog completly up to this point. I redirected her and she was fine but the woman in line in front of me asked "oh shes not friendly with other dogs?" Made me want to scream- Hanah is not "friendly" with other dogs, she ignores them for the most part- excpet the rude ones, she has little to no tolerance for them.

Hey funny this topic should turn up. I just got back from Caronlina Beach, NC. I was visitng my brother and we decided to take the dogs to the beach. At this particular area dogs are allowed so we loaded them up (three GSD and a beagle mix) We drive the 4 x 4 on the sand and find a nice spot away from everyone and let the dogs out at the shore. Well here comes someone's dog from down the beach. The people ( I could see about 6 of them) just watching their dog run up to three GSD (this dog was a hound mix). My dogs are great with other dogs but these other people didn't know that (my dogs were on E collars at the time too for my added control). My one male got kind of pissy at first but I said no and they went on to play and ignored the other dog. But what really pissed me off was these people never came to get their dog, they never asked if it was OK to have their dog there with mine. We had to pack it up and move even further down the beach to a more isolated area. This dog and owners were very lucky my dogs are dog friendly because there could have been some serious injuries to one hound mix. Too bad for this dog cause he's going to do that to the wrong dog sometime and he's going to pay the price for his owners stupidity

I am very greatful I have socialized my pup since very young. I cannot contol other peoples dogs, of course, but I can control mine. I feel comfortable taking my dog anywhere. He occasionally gets a rude dog thing, but I catch it and nip it in the butt. Unfortunately there will be bad dogs, bad kids, bad critters, it doesn't mean he gets to bite. At this point I get to decide. He is still young, I hope I can continue this control.

I am going to print this article and present it to a woman with a huge young Great Dane that makes show days a real pain. Of course I will have to wait till she shows her face again after Stryka very quietly put this obnoxious pair in their place with just THE LOOK and the Dane draged her along the ground back to her car. Now if someone can write one about the OWNERS of these FRIENDLY dogs please feel free to do so.

All of the dogs we have discussed can be trained. Unfortunitly, most of these types of owners can't.
