My heart goes out to you and your family.
I think that some sort of ceremony is a good thing, it certainly seemed to help my kiddo make some piece with his loss.
When our first husky passed away we planted a tree and made a headstone with my son using a kit from hobby lobby for stepping stones.
When his poor kitty was killed by the neighbor dog we had a full funeral, with flowers and a shoebox casket and a little service.

It will certainly hit everyone a bit differently... Talk with the kids and see what they think about how to handle the remains; that will direct you.
We had a Viking funeral for Adam - and it was wonderful! I don't know what Vikings did for their dogs however... We are all thinking of you and the kids.
my and my family's grief does not even approach yours, I would of been devestated and non functional for the remainder of my days

Dennis, that is NOT what I meant to infer. Yes the loss is different, but in many ways, not so much. Love is love and attachment is attachment - if the only loss your children have known is that of a beloved pet - it is the same.

My daughter suggested an Irish Wake, much to Mrs Jones disapproval I've already started
A real ceremony and the opportunity to express their grief -- I do believe that these are good for kids to be able to have.
Kids can be so conflicted and bottled up around grief and the flood of emotions that comes at them ....
I think that talking about the dog gives them "permission" to do so themselves (or not do it), and in a while leading by example to show that laughing about the dog's antics and other funny things is not only OK but actually honors the dog .... "Talk with the kids and see what they think about how to handle the remains; that will direct you."
Oh, what a tough life experience this one is.

The the other three dogs are confused, Max would not come inside and kept staring at the van, we had to leash him and drag him inside, Erika has not shown anything, Roxie is stressed, won't sit still, keeps looking out the gate and tearing up her rawhide and toys until her gums started bleeding, I take that back about Erika, she didn't make her usual demands and was actuly nice to me,

I'm sorry they weren't able to see the body. But three dogs .... that would have been really hard.
Nothing easy about any of this, is there?

LOL! Spare the woman and refrain from the keening which traditionally follows the wake.......otherwise she may shoot you and rightfully so.

Not to long ago I took Erika to Oklahoma for six weeks, none of the other dogs seemed too bothered by it, when we go back it was the doggy greatings like any other day and routine started right up. Now this time They know something is not right.

I am sure they not only feel the absence of Maggie but the emotions you are all feeling.

How did I miss the Irish wake? Viking funeral, Irish wake, potato, potatoe, etc... With your daughter's love of Irish dancing, this is such a wonderful idea!! I so agree with what Connie says about grief.
