The first retrieve I taught Murphy was to go get my bag-o-pills and vitamins (the curse of age). I used the command "Pill time", and for awhile it was the only retrieve command he knew.
When I was outside and asking him to retrieve non-pill items, I would get a lot of funny looks.

Drift has picked up a few "unconventional" commands working with the kids.
"Take a seat" = Sit
"What?" = Speak
"Find it" = go get a toy
"Say hello" = go and see the new people
"Boundaries!!" = quit sniffing what you are sniffing!!
Mine know "Find it" as well.
And if they have a toy that squeaks I can ask them "does sheep (or whatever it is) go squeak?" Of course, I then get the non-stop squeaking until I say "ok, I know it squeaks" and usually they'll stop.
If one of them comes and looks at me and barks alot of times I'll say "And then what happened" and the conversation will continue from there.
I also taught both of them "Go find dad" and "what's dad doing?" so that when they were pestering me too much I could send them in to his office to pester him. It took him quite awhile to figure out he could teach them the opposite command to send them away :-)

Barbara, your post made me laugh out loud because we live in a townhome complex and I'm sure the neighbors think I'm nuts when I'm yelling at Vader to "Go potty! Hurry up!" when it's freezing outside. I rarely curse but I have let it slip on occassion when he can't focus and is more concerned with smelling every blade of grass than doing his business.
I had forgotten but before my parent's sheltie went completely blind, we had trained her with the word "bang!" She would immediately freeze and drop to the ground and roll over with all four paws in the air. Sadly she doesn't do it anymore since losing her vision at Christmas time

My cue, "time for toenails" means "all dogs, scatter to the four corners of the universe". That was not the intention. LOL

Vader does the same thing...I don't have a command for trimming his nails but as soon as he sees me with the clippers he tucks tail and runs Going to the vet gets a similiar reaction...any other time he will be jumping in the car before I can barely get the door open. Somehow he just knows when we are going to the vet though and all of a sudden he's running the other way

Not around here!! I use a dremel and when I go to the drawer to get that out, I have two dogs running to their beds because that is were we do "toes". Trained this with marker training and they still get treats after each toe. The one dog not getting dremeled also gets a treat every few toes to reward that one for staying on it's bed.
One of the few things I've nailed... training the dremel and doing toe-toes!

I use a dremel, too. Unfortunately, JD has extremely ticklish feet. Hates having anything done with them. Even just getting out the heavy duty extension cord sends him into hiding.
I kept him from hating the vet by taking him just to visit and get treats in between visits. He dislike the scale at first, too, but he gets weighed everytime we visit and now he'll hop right up on to it.
Now I can just say "wanna go see Katie?" and he gets very excited to go.

I thought I was making progress desensitizing for toenail grinding, but 2 broken nails put us back to zero. I'm sending Ripley to Barbara's for toenail boot camp.
